Primary Job Function:
The Reynoldsburg City Schools' Color Guard Instructor is responsible for the instruction, choreography, and supervision of the Color Guard program within the Marching Band and Winterguard seasons. This role focuses on developing student technique in dance and equipment (flags, rifles, sabres) while ensuring a safe, disciplined, and artistically excellent performance environment that aligns with the district's extracurricular goals.
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid State of Ohio Pupil Activity Permit (must maintain current CPR, First Aid, Concussion, and Sudden Cardiac Arrest certifications). Satisfactory results of state and federal (BCI/FBI) background checks. High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience choreographing for competitive marching band or winter guard circuits (e.g., OMEA, MEPA, WGI). Strong background in dance and equipment technique.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary functions may include the following duties, responsibilities, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is
ILLUSTRATIVE
ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions within this classification. Instructional & Artistic Leadership Collaborate with the Band Director to select, design, and rehearse performance pieces that integrate with the marching band show. Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum for technique in flag, rifle, and sabre, as well as dance and movement. Program Operations Coordinate the booking of facilities and transportation for competitions and performances in alignment with district policy. Maintain accurate inventory of silks, poles, uniforms, and equipment; coordinate repairs or replacements as needed. Attend occasional booster meetings to coordinate equipment, travel, and fundraising needs. Student Supervision & Compliance Maintain direct supervision and responsibility for students during all rehearsals, performances, and travel. Ensure all program and district policies, including student code of conduct and safety protocols, are strictly adhered to. Conduct a minimum of two after-school rehearsals per week and attend all scheduled performances (minimum 6) and adjudicated events (minimum 3). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Modern color guard trends and
OMEA/WGI
adjudication standards; Ohio school safety protocols and Pupil Activity Permit requirements. Skilled in: Choreography design; equipment technique (flag/weapon); effective group rehearsal management; interpersonal communication. Ability to: Work flexible hours including evenings and weekends; motivate diverse groups of students; maintain professional boundaries and serve as a positive role model.
