Job Description

Under general supervision, the Plans Examiner is responsible for reviewing building plans for compliance with city ordinances, building codes and state regulations while providing excellent customer service to engineers, architects, builders, and citizens. Reviews commercial and residential construction plans for compliance with City, State, and Federal rules and regulations for compliance with applicable Building Codes, Zoning Ordinances, Subdivision and Land Development Regulations, Planned Development Ordinances, and Development Agreements adopted by the City of Aubrey. Provides technical assistance and coordination with design professionals, owners, and contractors to expedite permit approval. Furnishes information to the citizens, builders, architects, and engineers, regarding the requirements of building codes. Monitors status of pending applications. Facilitates corrections to be made when deficiencies exist and may assist builders, owners, and design professionals in determining how corrections are to be made to ensure conformance. Ensures accuracy when entering and maintaining plan review records into computer files. Manages and maintains records and documents collected and created for plan reviews performed by the City. Assists Chief Building Official with various projects. Provides backup support to inspections and permitting. Maintains a current knowledge of local ordinances and building codes. Performs other duties as may be assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE High School Diploma, or G.E.D. equivalency and six (6) years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
Valid Texas Driver's License; and
PREFERENCES
Bilingual in Spanish I.C.C. Building, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and/or Residential Plans Examiner Certifications
ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS
Ability in the following: manage databases and spreadsheet. provide excellent customer service skills. resolving customer complaints and concerns. general office procedures, typing and computer skills. have consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
Knowledge in the following:
construction codes, ordinances, technical manuals, building plans, and construction drawings. architectural design principles and techniques. building rules, regulations, codes, and ordinances. research methods to respond to building code and ordinance inquiries. computers and related equipment, hardware, and software. city policies and procedures. computer software such as Bluebeam and MGO.
Skills in the following:
work involves choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures. Professional judgment is required to apply the proper course of action. effective oral and written communications. reviewing construction plans for compliance with building, zoning, health and safety codes and ordinances. planning and implementing plan review processes and procedures. Work is performed indoors in an office setting. Work is sedentary, requiring the ability to remain in a stationary position most of the time. Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery is required. Repetitive finger movement, repetitive twisting or pressure involving wrists or hands is required. Frequently communicates with citizens and coworkers and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Occasionally moves about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. May occasionally lift up 20 pounds.
