Job Description

The purpose of this position is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people that live, work, play and learn in Farmers Branch by ensuring that existing structures and building construction, including remodeling, replacement and repair, is properly permitted and inspected to ensure compliance with national safety and quality standards and adopted building codes and city ordinances. Responsible for scheduling, coordinating and performing on site building and construction trades inspections to ensure compliance with various codes, regulations and standards; provide written notice regarding inspection results of deficiencies, issues correction notices; and performs re-inspections as needed to ensure compliance. Maintains accurate records and provides follow up to ensure compliance is obtained. Responds to inquiries by contractors, architects, property owners, and citizens regarding construction and building code issues. Investigates inquiries and/or complaints concerning with or without a permit. Issues stop work orders as necessary. Performs data entry in permit tracking software; coordinate scheduling of inspections; answers questions from the general public explaining policies and procedures; and all other duties as assigned. Represents the City in a professional manner at all times. May assist in reviewing applications, plans and drawings for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances prior to approving and issuing permits. High School diploma or GED equivalent is required. An associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school is preferred. Minimum of 1 year building inspection experience OR Minimum of 3 years of any combination licensed construction work (mechanical, electrical or plumbing), construction inspection, code enforcement and/or fire code inspection experience or equivalent is required. Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with on the job training. This position normally performs the duty assignment according to their own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. Special projects are managed with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of the technical field with use of analytic judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Ability to read and apply relevant literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals and/or legal documents. Intermediate ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar using all parts of speech. Work may require providing advice to others outside directing reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies. Contact may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.
