Job Description

Job Details The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Building Inspector or Senior Building Inspector classification. The hourly range for the Building Inspector is $24.89
- $28.63 and the hourly rate for the Senior Building Inspector position is: $27.45
- $31.
- 3:30pm, Monday through Friday, which helps to avoid long commute times!
Summary of Duties :
Under basic supervision, the Building Inspector is responsible for conducting on-site field inspections to ensure that new construction and existing properties are in compliance with applicable codes.Distinguishing Characteristics :
This is the journey-level classification in the Building Inspector series. Incumbents follow diversified procedures and implement processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Building Inspector, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job. Responsible for inspecting new and existing residential, commercial, multi-family, and other buildings and structures for critical life safety standards to ensure compliance with all applicable building codes. Ability to review and interpret construction plans, specifications, architectural and engineering drawings for enforcement of applicable State and local building codes. Perform inspections including zoning, yard location, footing, foundation, frame, and building code requirements for compliance. Uses knowledge from studying and training on Codes and standards to verify conformance with adopted International Codes, construction documents, and the City's Code of Ordinances. Maintains files on buildings under construction to satisfy special inspection requirements for soil, concrete tests, steel, welding etc.; Interprets regulations and code requirements to builder and property owners to assist them in compliance with construction plans to meet established standards. Maintain a working knowledge of the current trends in construction and in building codes, both on the State and National levels. Document inspection results that are thorough, clear, precise, and accurate to track and maintain inspection records using computer or IPad. Responsible for working independently managing time, routes, and execute assigned inspections. Responsible to construction complaints from the general public. Ability to communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, and citizens whom service is provided. Complies with all written City and department policies and procedures. Ability to work in a professional team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers, and customers with respect. Ability to produce desired work outcomes, including quality, quantity, and timeliness. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.Marginal Duties:
Performs other duties as assigned. Participates in special projects.Typical Decisions :
The incumbent determines if residential construction and existing properties are in compliance with applicable building codes and ordinances.Minimum Qualifications :
Knowledge of:
National, regional, and City building codes and ordinances.Skill in:
Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent.Experience:
One (1) year of experience conducting inspections of construction projects. Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirementsLicenses and Certifications:
Texas Class C driver's license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law). ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner- 79 (required within one year of hire). ICC Residential Building Inspector certification
- B1 (required within one year of hire).
Senior Building Inspector Summary of Duties :
Under general supervision, the Building Inspector, Senior is responsible for conducting on-site field inspections to ensure that new construction and existing properties are in compliance with applicable codes.Distinguishing Characteristics :
This is the advanced journey-level classification in the Building Inspector series. The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policy. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures. Works under indirect supervision, conferring with supervisor on unusual matters.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

- B2 (required).
Conditions of Employment:
Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Must possess mobility to work in and around City and private buildings, facilities, and construction sites, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to operate varied tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing field inspections. Employees may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Employees work in and around various buildings, facilities, and construction sites and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, heights, mechanical and electrical hazards, dust and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
