Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION
The Building Inspector is responsible for conducting inspections to ensure that new construction and existing properties are in compliance with the applicable codes and ordinances. Under general supervision, the Building Inspector works independently to inspect all building and site construction of industrial, commercial, multifamily, and single-family buildings and remodel work. Ensures compliance with approved plans, laws, codes, and regulations, monitoring minimum standards for fire and life/safety codes, structural integrity, and public welfare.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Inspects buildings and sites during all phases of construction for compliance with the adopted building codes, city ordinances, and approved plans. Prepare inspection reports, note violations, reviews construction plans, and communicates issues of interest or concern. 2. Interacts with the public and explains building code and ordinance requirements. 3. Reviews residential and commercial plans and documentation to ensure compliance with applicable codes. 4. Interprets city, state, and federal code and construction standards to verify construction meets said standards. 5. Maintains computer logs of inspection reports, entering inspection results into permitting software. Scans and archives reports and documentation. 6. Performs daily inspections of assigned vehicle to the prescribed form and determining if service is necessary. 7. The incumbent is expected to perform as an emergency worker in the event of a disaster. 8. Perform other related duties as assigned.
TYPICAL DECISIONS
The incumbent determines if new or existing properties under construction are in compliance with the applicable codes and ordinances.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge:
Position requires a working knowledge of the International Building Codes, National Electrical Code, and City zoning regulations and ordinances.
Skills:
Position requires effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to use a computer terminal and peripheral equipment, and superior customer service.
Education:
High school diploma or
GED Experience:
Five years experience in construction trades, or three years experience in conducting inspections of construction trades, or equivalent course work in related discipline.
NOTE:
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications may be an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certificates:
Texas Class C driver s license; Texas State Plumbing Inspector License (or obtainment within two years of appointment); ICC Certifications in Building, Mechanical, and Electrical Inspections (or obtainment within one year of appointment). Electrical trade experience preferred.
