OBJECTIVES
Under general supervision of the Chief Building Inspector, is responsible for the enforcement of laws, national codes and ordinances pertaining to building construction and safety, in order to ensure the protection of life and property. Prepares technical reports and maintains building records. Simple to difficult decisions on a variety of issues must be made daily. This position requires daily contact with the public, requiring simple courtesies and exercise of tact and diplomacy. This position has no supervisory authority. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Chief Building Inspector.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Inspects all residential, commercial buildings, apartment, housing complexes, dwellings, schools, mobile homes, businesses, nursing homes, daycare centers, and registered homes. Prepares technical reports and provides information to the State, County, City Manager, Planning Director, and City Commission as required or requested. Shall be responsible for inspecting and keeping records of city buildings, plans, facilities, equipment and grounds. The Building Inspector shall enforce all Building Codes required to protect consumers against contractors, merchants, electricians, plumbers, mechanical contractors and others. Building Inspector shall be able to read, examine, and interpret blue prints. Building Inspector shall be able to interpret the International Building Codes and other related construction codes. Building Inspector shall review plans for compliance with IRC and IBC Building Codes as well as with NEC Codes. Will perform other related duties as required.
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS
City vehicle, cell phone, personal computer, trade tools and equipment and office equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical effort limited to lifting 20-30 pounds; work involves standing and walking from place to place. Works normal office working hours; 5-day, 40-hour week. Position is exposed to hazards which may result in lost time, accident, exposure to soiling of clothing and skin; work involves normal weather changes.
EDUCATION/SKILLS REQUIRED
Requires a High School Diploma with a minimum of two (2) years' experience in related field. Must be certified in at least one of the following certifications: Mechanical, Electrical, Plans Examiner, Residential Plumbing Inspector, Building Inspector with ICC (International Code of Congress) within six (6) months and licensed as a Code Enforcement Officer within one (1) year. Must also have sufficient knowledge of the subject to perform effectively, with little direct supervision, in work situations which are varied or which have deviations and irregularities. Must possess a valid Texas driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
