Directional Drill Operator/Locator Open Position Position Summary:

The Directional Drill Operator will operate horizontal/directional drill rigs, locating equipment and product support equipment for the installation of underground utilities including telecommunications cable, conduit, and fiber optic cable. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of work practices related to the underground construction field to support utility infrastructure construction including safe operation of equipment, appropriate PPE and participating in daily and weekly safety talks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Operates various equipment including mini-excavators, plows trenchers and directional bore machines for the installation or maintenance of underground utilities. Ensure all applicable permits, clearances and locates are complete and on site and confirm bore path with install foreman and drill operator (including walking the bore path) Conduct manual labor activities including use of power tools, jack-hammers and trench tamping equipment, hand digging around existing utilities, placing conduit, placing hand holes/manholes, backfilling and compacting. Responsible for daily maintenance of equipment such as maintaining fluids, greasing equipment as required and other routine maintenance as necessary. Must be familiar with OSHA Regulations regarding trench safety. Ability to work under pressure, with commitment to deadlines in a changing environment and work as a team member. Operates Horizontal Directional Drill for installation of underground utilizes. Performs all duties according to prescribed safety procedures and uses appropriate safety equipment. Ensures all applicable permits and locates are complete and on site. Operates vehicles and equipment operations from trucks to other equipment as directed and certified. Performs proper maintenance by greasing, oiling, and making minor repairs on equipment..

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with different size Vermeer or Ditch Witch units and various brands of locating equipment. Working experience of underground construction Ability to read and understand maps, drawings and diagrams for project build processes Willing to work outdoors in all types of weather and work overtime as required. CDL Minimum Qualifications A High School Diploma, or equivalent. Clean Driving Record Occasional Travel May be Required Requires medium to heavy manual work that involves walking, standing, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects and involves exerting between 20-50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50-100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
