Petrakis Contracting LLC has served the greater Pittsburgh area since 1984, specializing in sewer, water, and gas utility work, as well as landscape, pipe bursting, hydro-vac, directional drilling, and paving. About the Role We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused Horizontal Directional Drill Operator to join our utility construction team. This role involves the installation of gas, water, and sewer lines using horizontal directional drilling equipment. The ideal candidate is dependable, mechanically inclined, and able to work effectively in a team-oriented, outdoor environment. This position requires experience operating Vermeer 40x55DR, Vermeer 9x13, and TT Technologies pit-launch drills, as well as the ability to locate drill heads using DigiTrak F5 and F1 systems. Candidates should also be comfortable working with drill fluids and reclaiming systems. Key Responsibilities Operate horizontal directional drills, including Vermeer 40x55DR, Vermeer 9x13, and TT Technologies pit-launch models Locate drill heads accurately using DigiTrak F5 and F1 locating systems Set up and manage drill fluids (mud and water), including use of reclaimers to recycle fluids Perform HDPE pipe fusion using handheld and hydraulic fusion equipment Assist installation crews with mainline and service line construction Perform general labor duties including shoveling, raking, brooming, and trenching Monitor and inspect drill tooling, reamers, and piercing tools for wear or damage Qualifications Experience operating horizontal directional drills Proficiency with DigiTrak F5 and F1 locating systems Working knowledge of drilling fluids and recycling systems Experience with HDPE pipe fusion (manual and hydraulic methods) Basic mechanical skills and understanding of drill rig and equipment maintenance Ability to operate excavators, backhoes, and skid steers
