Safety Spotters serve as the eyes of the Equipment Operator by guiding equipment and material movement from ground-level and elevated work areas. Depending on the assignment, one spotter may coordinate from the ground while another assists from a rooftop or designated landing area. This position requires strong attention to detail, clear communication, situational awareness, and the ability to remain focused during equipment operations. Key Responsibilities Guide the Equipment Operator during equipment movement, lifting, and material-placement activities. Use clear and consistent hand signals approved by the Equipment Operator. Maintain visual or radio communication with the operator. Immediately signal the operator to stop if visibility is lost, communication is unclear, or an unsafe condition is identified. Monitor equipment blind spots and areas that may not be visible to the operator. Confirm that travel paths, lifting zones, roof edges, landing areas, and material-placement locations are clear. Assist with guiding materials safely onto and off rooftops or elevated work areas. Confirm that loads appear properly secured before movement begins. Keep employees, pedestrians, vehicles, and unauthorized personnel outside active equipment and lifting zones. Direct pedestrians toward designated safe crossing areas. Assist with directing delivery vehicles and construction traffic as needed. Set up and maintain cones, barricades, caution tape, and restricted-access areas. Communicate obstructions, changing conditions, weather concerns, or other hazards to the Equipment Operator. Assist with organizing materials, tools, straps, pallets, and equipment. Help maintain clean and orderly receiving, staging, rooftop, and ground-level work areas. Support end-of-day cleanup and return materials and safety equipment to designated locations. Assist with basic material counts, delivery checks, and photo documentation when assigned. Report material, delivery, or logistical concerns to the Equipment Operator or Project Coordinator. Participate in daily safety meetings and equipment-operation briefings. Follow all safety procedures, operator instructions, and site requirements. Perform additional ground-support, cleanup, material-handling, or traffic-control duties as assigned. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience as a construction spotter, safety spotter, signal person, flagger, or ground guide. Experience working around telehandlers, forklifts, man lifts, boom lifts, or scissor lifts. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification. Signal-person or rigging training. Fall-protection training. First aid and CPR certification. Experience on commercial solar or large-scale construction projects. Experience directing pedestrian or vehicle traffic. General Requirements Authorization to work in the United States. Valid driver's license. Reliable transportation. Ability to satisfy applicable project-access and background-screening requirements. Ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions. Ability to work on rooftops or elevated areas when properly trained and protected. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to bend, climb, reach, and perform general field activities. Ability to lift and carry cones, barricades, straps, tools, and light materials. Ability to wear and properly use required personal protective equipment. Willingness to work adjusted schedules or extended hours when required.
