THE POSITION
: This position is a member of the Public Works Department, and performs a variety of electrical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's electrical systems and equipment; works with contractors and other City departments on City projects; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Perform a variety of electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of the City's electrical systems and equipment; repair wiring and electrical equipment as needed. Install, inspect, maintain and repair electrical systems of City streets including traffic signals and lighting. Perform electrical maintenance duties for the City's cogeneration plants; troubleshoot and repair electrical problems in generators, switchboards, pumps, and controllers. Identify and repair problems in various electrical systems including remote control units, signal lines, and motor and air conditioning controllers; install new electrical systems as needed. Assist in the repair and maintenance of electrical devices, systems, equipment, and wiring for the City's air conditioning and heating units. Operate a variety of equipment, tools, and vehicles including boom trucks, asphalt cutters, forklifts and pick-up trucks. Requisition tools, materials, and equipment; order appropriate materials and supplies as needed. Work with contractors and other City departments on a variety of City projects as needed. Maintain accurate records and detailed logs as needed. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Minimum requirements must be clearly demonstrated on the application to be considered, however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to compete further in the selection process. (One year of work experience is the equivalent of 12 months of full-time work. "Full-time work" means at least 36 hours of work over a period of one week or 1,872 hours of work over a period of at least 12 months.) Qualifications noted as "desirable" or "preferred" are not included as part of the minimum requirements.
Experience :
Two (2) years of experience in maintaining and repairing electrical systems is required. Experience working in a public sector environment is preferred. (Public sector agency includes State, County, School, or City Government, Law Enforcement, or other Public Sector Agency.)
Training :
A High School Diploma or equivalent education supplemented by coursework in electrical theory or a related field is required.
License or Certificates:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Class C Driver License with a satisfactory driving record (a driving record may be deemed unsatisfactory for any of the following reasons: three or more moving violations or reportable accidents within the last three years; conviction of driving under the influence within the last five years) is required. Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment, an appropriate, valid Traffic Signal Certification Level II is required.
Special Requirements:
Incumbent will be enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice Program. The DMV Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbents driving record and driving record status on a periodic basis to the City. Must successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation, fingerprints, and a physical exam.
