ELECTRICIAN I/II

Position Summary This is a skilled position in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of the City's street lighting, traffic signal and all electric systems along City streets, in City buildings and facilities. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient performance of every type of electrical installation and repair work required by the City. Essential Functions Installs new and replacement street lighting systems and fixtures. Maintains existing streetlight system including troubleshooting, location of faults in ground, manually digging up and repairing faults. Removes existing poles and wiring and installs replacements using Vactor, crane truck and trenchers. Trenches and hand-digs cable, and wires poles and fixtures. Installs and maintains traffic signals, signal controllers, loop detection wires and related electrical installations. Installs, repairs, and replaces interior electrical wiring and electrical systems in municipal buildings Operates various types of light to medium construction equipment and electrical testing and locating equipment. May train new personnel in proper work techniques; may serve as crew leader. Performs snow plowing, snow removal and salting work. Completes daily timesheets and routine reports on work performed and equipment used. Assures the maintenance of safe work areas and equipment; promptly corrects work hazards, as necessary. Reports all work related injuries immediately, complies with all safety rules and attends appropriate safety programs. Promotes and maintains responsive community relations. Performs related duties and manual labor as assigned. Responds to emergency call outs on a rotating basis. Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.

Qualifications Electrician II:

Must possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); AND have work experience in electrical maintenance. Experience as a municipal electrician and completion of an apprenticeship program is a plus; OR the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by the Human Resources Department.

Electrician I:

Must possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); AND must have a minimum of five-years of full-time experience in electrical maintenance which could include an apprenticeship, municipal electrical; OR the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by the Human Resources Department.

Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Electrician I/II:

Valid Illinois driver's license. Valid Class A CDL driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire. Possession of a current electrical contractor's license within one year of employment and maintained during employment. IMSA Level 1 certification within one year of employment.

Electrician I - in addition:

Possession of a current electrical contractor's license required at time of hire and maintained during employment. IMSA Level 2 certification within one year of employment. OSHA 10 certification. Required Skills and Knowledge Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in electrical maintenance. Correct business English, including speech, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Ability to use tools, materials and equipment in a correct and safe manner. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to electrical maintenance work. Knowledge of traffic regulations. Considerable knowledge of the basic principles of electricity and the ability to learn proper electrical theory and practices. Considerable knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and electrical construction and installation principles. Ability to work from sketches and plans. Ability to maintain working relationships with other staff. Ability to operate various dump trucks, end loaders, aerial lifts and directional boring machines. Ability to manually dig holes and trenches for the installation and repair of streetlight poles and wiring. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this role. Physical/Mental Requirements Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds; weights exceeding 50 pounds lifted with assistance and/or use of equipment. Ability to set-up and climb various ladders and scaffold. Operates and performs work from lift truck and works at heights up to 60 feet. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, use hands and fingers to operate equipment, reach and lift, climb, balance, kneel and stoop. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to don PPE as required.

Salary and Benefits Electrician II:

Grade P05 - $31.08 to $40.48/hour

Electrician I:

Grade P11 - $37.79 to $49.12/hour
