Job Description

Under general supervision, the Electrician performs electrical work to support the safe and reliable operation of the college facilities. This position installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures involving circuits carrying less than 600 volts. The Electrician ensures compliance with safety standards while supporting classrooms, laboratories, facilities, and administrative buildings. The role is critical to campus operations, providing both preventive maintenance and immediate response to outages and emergencies. Performs electrical work on the college campus for new installations and electrical repairs for work not to exceed 600 volts. Include work, but not limited to, lighting, receptacles, electrical panels and breaker replacement, hooking up new equipment and running new service. Performs necessary carpentry, masonry, painting, wall installation, plumbing, and other maintenance repairs for all College facilities. Assists in keeping maintenance and repair records Completes work orders involving repair, cleaning, maintenance and moving furniture and equipment Performs preventive maintenance tasks on equipment, grounds, and facilities Assists with snow and ice removal during inclement weather Participates in rotating on-call schedule for emergency situations during off duty hours as assigned by the Supervisor. Associate Degree in Electrical Systems Technology, Building Construction or related field preferred At least two years of electrical experience including maintenance, repair, and installation in compliance with the National Electrical Code Previous experience in building repair, renovation and maintenance OR an equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Possession of a NC Limited Electrical License required Valid driver's license with clean driving record required
Work Environment:
Work is performed across a variety of campus environments including classrooms, laboratories, mechanical rooms, construction/renovation sites, and outdoor areas. The position is regularly exposed to varying environmental conditions such as heat, cold, noise, dust, moisture, and confined spaces. The role involves working around electrical systems, tools, and equipment, requiring strict adherence to safety procedures, codes, and regulations. The employee frequently interacts with faculty, staff, students, and contractors while performing maintenance and repair tasks, often responding to urgent or emergency situations that may impact campus operations.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position: Frequent physical activity including climbing ladders and stairs; balancing; stooping; kneeling; crouching; crawling; reaching; standing; walking; pushing; pulling; lifting; and repetitive use of hands and fingers. Manual dexterity is required for handling tools, equipment, and materials, as well as the ability to grasp, feel, hear, and communicate effectively. Must be capable of performing medium to heavy physical work, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Visual acuity, including depth perception and color recognition, is required to safely perform skilled trade and technical tasks involving equipment, machinery, and detailed repair work.
Normal Working Hours:
Standard schedule, Monday - Friday; occasional early morning, evening, or weekend hours required to support maintenance projects, campus events, or emergency repairs. The position participates in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to electrical issues and campus emergencies outside of normal working hours, including inclement weather events.
