The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) is a state agency responsible for maintaining the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway - two of the busiest toll roads in the United States. The NJTA is dedicated to the safe and efficient movement of people and goods along their toll roads. Every day, the Authority's highways provide the safest, quickest, and most convenient routes for hundreds of commuters, truckers, and recreational travelers. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) is accepting applications for an Electrician position in the Operations department, located on the New Jersey Turnpike highway. The Electrician performs all assigned duties, such as installing protection devices, inspects, repairs, cleans and maintains all electrical systems and equipment using various hand and power tools, special equipment, operates bucket trucks, trucks and autos with care and safety. 1. Must know basic principles of alternating and direct current electricity and be familiar with AC and DC power and control systems. 2. Must know techniques of electrical wiring, installation of conduit, splicing and connection of switch gear and other electrical accessories and controls. 3. Maintenance and repair of changeable message, VMS, speed warning and speed limit signs. 4. Must be able to read, understand and use building blueprints, electrical schematic diagrams and wire circuit drawings. 5. Must be able to compute voltage, amperage and resistance factors. 6. Requires attentiveness when working, especially with high voltage and primary circuits. 7. Requires dependability to maintain electrical equipment and systems. 8. Requires reasoning ability and mechanical aptitude to trouble shoot and inspect, determine malfunctions, clean, repair and maintain electro-mechanical equipment and systems, motors, controls, switchboxes, feeder systems, area lighting, generators, primary voltage, transformers and other related electrical work on equipment and appliances including cleaning and painting. 9. Perform mark outs to protect underground facilities within the Turnpike right of way. 10. Ability to work independently and make go judgment decisions without extensive supervision. Must be able to identify and order parts for equipment repairs, moving and storage including office equipment and furniture. 11. Keeps tools and equipment in proper place and in good working condition. 12. Maintains a safe, secure and sanitary workplace. 13. Prepares routine and special reports, or records, surveys, estimates and schedules. 14. Performs all related work as required within this classification and as a Maintenance Person in emergency situations. Management reserves the right to require that other or different tasks be performed as assigned. 1. Responsible to the supervision of a foreman, Supervisor or Designee. 2. Requires the ability to perform physical activities involving full use of upper and lower extremities, eye hand co-ordination, manual dexterity and able to climb 300' above grade, plus the continuous good health and freedom from disabling physical or mental defects which may affect the performance of duties. 3. 20/40 vision in each eye (with or without glasses) and has 70 degrees of peripheral vision. 4. Requires normal color discrimination and vision. 5. Has adequate hearing to work safely around heavy equipment. 6. Formal education or training equivalent to the completion of high school, GED, or the graduation from a vocational or trade school in the electro-mechanical field, or the satisfactory completion of the Turnpike Apprentice Program. 7. Requires ability to understand written and oral instructions. 8. Must be reliable and dependable. 9. Must have a valid driver's license with a CDL endorsement. 10. Four years' experience in electro-mechanical industrial installations and or maintenance and the passing of a profile test. 11. Must be a qualified Journeyman electrician or have a N.J. Electrical License Starting pay will be the minimum salary stated in this posting. Determination of reporting location and shift shall be made following offer of employment. This position is ineligible for flex time and/or telework. Electricians are provided with uniform cleaning and are both given tools and a Tool allowance for purchase of other tools. Toll-free commutation is available for employee travel to and from work on the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. This position is assigned a vehicle to be picked up at an NJTA authorized location. This position is represented by IFPTE Local 194.
