Job Title:
Elevator Technician Job Description The Elevator Technician travels regionally across Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana to install, repair, and maintain a wide range of elevator systems in primarily commercial settings, with some residential work. This role works on first shift, Monday through Friday, and involves periodic overnight travel for 2-3 days at a time to complete projects. The technician uses a company vehicle, works as part of a team, and performs installation, tear downs, new construction, troubleshooting, and scheduled service on commercial elevators, freight elevators, traction elevators, and chair lifts. The position requires strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, the ability to read schematics and blueprints, and a commitment to safety, quality, and customer service. Responsibilities Travel to various client sites across Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana using a company vehicle to perform elevator service and installation work. Install, tear down, and commission new elevator systems in commercial, industrial, construction, and occasional residential environments. Perform repairs, maintenance, and scheduled service on commercial elevators, freight elevators, traction elevators, and chair lifts. Conduct safety checks, including inspecting safety circuits and performing fire service testing to ensure compliance and safe operation. Troubleshoot and repair open relays, perform PLC troubleshooting, and diagnose electrical and control system issues. Carry out maintenance and repairs on motors, including disassembly, teardown, and replacement as needed. Interpret and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and blueprints to complete installations and repairs accurately. Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively for mechanical, electrical, and construction-related tasks. Perform preventative and corrective maintenance to reduce downtime and extend the life of elevator equipment. Respond to service calls and field service assignments, adjusting to varying site conditions and work orders. Work collaboratively in a team environment, coordinating tasks and communicating clearly with coworkers and supervisors. Interact professionally with customers on-site, providing clear communication and maintaining a strong customer service focus. Lift and move equipment and components weighing up to 75 pounds as part of installation and maintenance activities. Remain flexible to stay late when necessary to complete projects and meet critical deadlines. Demonstrate accountability, maintain a positive attitude, and contribute to a culture of teamwork and continuous learning. Quickly learn and apply new instructions and procedures, acting independently after being shown tasks once. Essential Skills Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with hydraulics, particularly in relation to elevator or similar equipment. Experience performing equipment installation or maintenance work in an industrial, commercial, or construction environment. Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively for mechanical and electrical tasks. Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills, including experience with schematics, wiring, and basic control systems. Capability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and blueprints. Ability to perform preventative and corrective maintenance on mechanical and electrical systems. Customer service focus and comfort with direct customer interaction at client sites. Clean driving record and ability to safely operate a company vehicle for regional travel. Willingness and ability to travel approximately 50% of the time, including staying overnight for 2-3 days when required. Willingness to stay late when needed to complete jobs and meet project deadlines. Physical ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work safely in industrial, commercial, construction, and residential environments. Strong sense of accountability and reliability in completing assigned tasks and following procedures. Positive attitude and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to understand instructions quickly and work independently after being shown a task once. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience as an elevator mechanic. Previous field service technician experience, particularly in mechanical or electrical service roles. Military experience, especially in technical, mechanical, or electrical specialties. Completion of a wind turbine program, such as the program at KVCC, or similar technical training. Experience working with hydraulic systems in industrial or construction settings. Experience in wind turbine maintenance, industrial service calls, or similar field-based technical work. Familiarity with PLC troubleshooting and relay-based control systems. Experience working in industrial facilities such as paper mills, commercial buildings, or construction sites. Comfort working with both preventative and corrective maintenance programs. Work Environment The work environment varies widely, with approximately 50% of time spent traveling to different client sites using a company vehicle. Technicians work primarily in commercial and industrial settings, including office buildings, paper mills, new construction sites, and some residential locations for chair lift installations and service. The role is first shift, typically Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the expectation of occasionally staying later to complete projects and meet deadlines. Work is hands-on and physically active, involving the use of hand tools, power tools, mechanical equipment, and electrical diagnostic tools in field service conditions. Technicians frequently work in teams, coordinating tasks in dynamic environments that may include noise, machinery, and construction activity. The position does not require weekend work, but it does require flexibility for overnight travel and working in varied site conditions while maintaining safety and professionalism. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
