Job Description

The Design and Estimator Specialist is responsible for developing complete technical designs and cost estimates for material handling systems—including pallet racking, mezzanines/platforms, shelving, and pick modules. This position supports the sales team by transforming client requirements into engineered layouts, detailed bills of materials (BOMs), and comprehensive quotations. The role requires strong technical knowledge of material handling systems, excellent spatial and design skills, and the ability to balance functionality, code compliance, and cost efficiency. The Design and Estimator Specialist ensures that all proposed systems meet applicable safety standards, building codes, and customer performance needs. Design and Preliminary Engineering Develop layout designs for racking systems, platforms, and pick modules using AutoCAD or 3D modeling software. Interpret client specifications, warehouse drawings, and operational data to design optimized storage solutions. Perform preliminary structural evaluations and loading calculations for racking and mezzanine designs. Ensure all designs comply with RMI (Rack Manufacturers Institute) , IBC , OSHA , and applicable local building codes. Collaborate with engineering and project management to refine layouts and ensure constructability. Generate detailed drawings and system configurations for proposal and approval stages. B. Estimation and Costing Develop detailed Bills of Materials (BOMs) for all designed systems, including racking components, decking, fasteners, and accessories. Estimate costs for materials, fabrication, freight, and installation services. Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations to ensure competitive and accurate pricing. Maintain cost libraries and pricing databases for standardized components and services. Analyze alternative materials or configurations to support value engineering and cost optimization. C. Quotation and Proposal Development Prepare professional quotation packages that include design layouts, scope of supply, technical notes, and pricing summaries. Ensure all proposals are complete, accurate, and aligned with customer requirements and profitability targets. Support sales in presenting and clarifying technical aspects of proposals to clients. Collaborate with management to determine pricing strategy, margins, and delivery schedules. D. Coordination and Communication Work closely with Sales, Project Management, and Operations to align design intent with project execution. Communicate effectively with suppliers, subcontractors, and clients to clarify design, technical, and cost issues. Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, or customer reviews to verify existing conditions and requirements. Provide technical assistance to the project team during installation or fabrication phases. E. Continuous Improvement and Quality Control Review completed projects to compare estimated vs. actual costs, identifying opportunities for process improvement. Maintain organized and accurate design files, project documentation, and revision histories. Recommend improvements to design templates, pricing tools, and standardization of product configurations. Stay informed of new racking technologies, safety standards, and material handling trends. Material handling industry experience is required.
