Sheet Metal Estimator Addison, IL Full-TimeOn-Site$100,000 - $140,000 /yr Posted July 23, 2026 Sheet Metal Estimator Position Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented Sheet Metal Estimator to produce accurate, competitive estimates for sheet metal fabrication and HVAC ductwork projects. The role focuses on quantity surveying, material takeoffs, cost and labor estimating, bid preparation, and ensuring estimates comply with project specifications, codes, and fabrication constraints. The estimator will support project teams by optimizing material usage, managing change orders, and coordinating with vendors and fabrication shops to deliver reliable pricing and schedules. Key Responsibilities Prepare complete and accurate material takeoffs and quantity surveys for sheet metal and HVAC ductwork projects. Develop detailed cost estimates including material, labor, equipment, subcontractor costs, overhead and profit. Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and shop/fabrication drawings to produce scope-accurate estimates. Use AutoCAD, Revit, SigmaNEST and nesting/CNC software to validate parts, perform nesting, and optimize material utilization. Select appropriate gauges, plan metal cutting/shearing processes, and evaluate fabrication methods for cost and feasibility. Produce bid packages, pricing breakdowns, and participate in bid preparation and submission processes. Manage change order estimation and documentation, update job costing and communicate impacts to project teams. Obtain and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing, verify lead times, and incorporate into estimates and schedules. Utilize ERP/estimating software, advanced Microsoft Excel and quantity takeoff software to prepare estimates, reports and cost-tracking spreadsheets. Coordinate with production, project managers and engineers to ensure estimates are aligned with shop capabilities and project schedules. Ensure compliance with HVAC codes and standards (e.g., SMACNA, ASHRAE) and applicable welding symbols/techniques and insulation requirements. Monitor material optimization opportunities and propose value-engineering alternatives to reduce waste and cost. Qualifications Associate degree or certificate in construction management, mechanical engineering, estimating or related field, or equivalent trade experience. Minimum 5 years of estimating experience in sheet metal fabrication and HVAC ductwork estimating. Proven skills in quantity surveying, material takeoffs, cost estimating, labor costing, job costing and pricing. Hands-on experience with AutoCAD, Revit, SigmaNEST and nesting/CNC software; familiarity with shop/fabrication drawing creation and review. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced formulas, pivot tables, macros) and experience with ERP/estimating software and quantity takeoff tools. Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC codes and standards (SMACNA, ASHRAE), welding symbols/techniques, insulation estimating and gauge selection. Experience with vendor/subcontractor pricing, procurement coordination and bid preparation. Familiarity with project scheduling tools such as MS Project and ability to incorporate schedule impact into estimates. Excellent blueprint reading skills, analytical attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to manage multiple bids under tight deadlines. Change order management experience and solid understanding of job costing and project financial tracking. Certifications such as Certified Professional Estimator (CCE) or equivalent are a plus.
