Job Description

Our Michigan-based commercial construction company offers architecture and design, design-build, construction management, general contracting, mechanical contracting, and self-performed trade services, allowing clients to streamline projects from initial planning through final completion. We are looking for a Senior Commercial Estimator to lead the development of accurate, competitive, and strategic cost estimates in support of commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects. This role plays a critical part in supporting the company's commitment to quality, safety, fiscal responsibility, and client satisfaction by ensuring estimates reflect project scope, risk, and execution strategies. Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field
  • Preferred
  • Commercial ground up construction estimating experience (5 years with degree or 10 years without degree).
  • Advanced understanding of construction practices, means and methods, and cost controls
  • Ability or experience with numerous ground up commercial construction trades such as structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, interior & exterior finishing, site work.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex estimates, including hard bids and negotiated work.
  • Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software (preferably Microsoft Project). Required
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical abilities.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must pass physical, background check, and initial/annual drug screening (marijuana included).
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the preparation of detailed cost estimates for complex and high-value construction projects from conceptual design through final bid.
  • Review and approve estimates prepared by Estimators and Junior Estimators for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards.
  • Serve as the estimating lead during preconstruction meetings, scope reviews, and bid strategy sessions.
  • Analyze drawings, specifications, schedules, and contract documents to identify risks, opportunities, and cost drivers.
  • Develop project budgets, value engineering alternatives, and pricing strategies aligned with corporation objectives.
  • Solicit, evaluate, and level subcontractor and supplier bids to ensure scope coverage and competitiveness.
  • Collaborate with project management teams to ensure a seamless transition from estimate to project execution.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, architects, engineers, and clients.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to estimating staff.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance estimating accuracy and efficiency.
  • Support leadership in go/no-go decisions, forecasting, and market analysis.
  • Maintain confidentiality of proprietary, financial, and strategic information.
  • May provide functional leadership and mentorship to Estimators and Junior Estimators.
