Job Description

Mechanical Estimator The Mechanical Estimator prepares accurate and detailed cost estimates for mechanical systems on construction and industrial projects, with a primary focus on HVAC and plumbing scopes. This role analyzes project plans, specifications, and related documentation to determine material, labor, equipment, and time requirements, helping ensure projects are financially viable and delivered within budget. Responsibilities Assist in estimating HVAC and plumbing projects under the guidance of experienced estimators. Analyze blueprints, plans, and specifications to understand project scope and mechanical system requirements. Prepare detailed cost estimates, including labor, materials, equipment, and related project expenses. Conduct quantity takeoffs for mechanical systems and identify required materials and components. Source and evaluate materials and subcontractors to support accurate and competitive pricing. Interpret project documents and collaborate with vendors, subcontractors, and project teams to clarify requirements and resolve discrepancies. Conduct site visits to assess existing conditions, logistical challenges, and installation constraints. Identify cost factors such as materials, labor, equipment, and potential cost-saving options through alternative methods or value engineering. Maintain and update cost databases, unit prices, and historical cost information to improve estimating accuracy. Support contract negotiations with subcontractors and vendors by providing detailed cost breakdowns and scope clarifications. Use estimating software and digital tools to quantify project requirements and prepare formal estimates. Review project specifications, addendums, and revisions to ensure estimates reflect the latest project information. Participate in site surveys for renovation or retrofit projects to gather field data for estimating purposes. Assist in reviewing construction schedules to align estimates with project timelines and phasing. Participate in submittal reviews and assembly to ensure proposed materials and equipment align with project estimates. Help prepare as-built drawings and close-out documentation related to mechanical systems and project costs. Essential Skills Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand mechanical systems and components. Experience in mechanical, construction, and industrial project environments. Knowledge of piping, HVAC, plumbing, and pipe installation practices. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and MEP drawings. Familiarity with civil and field construction concepts as they relate to mechanical systems. Understanding of construction management principles in relation to estimating and project planning. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation, reporting, and data analysis. Strong organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail and accuracy. Minimum of four years of college in an engineering-related discipline. Minimum of four years of on-the-job training in mechanical estimating. Comfort working with hand tools and basic field equipment as needed for site visits and surveys. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with mechanical estimation in construction and industrial settings. Familiarity with estimating software and digital takeoff tools. Ability to collaborate effectively with project teams, vendors, and subcontractors. Strong analytical skills to identify cost factors and value engineering opportunities. Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Willingness to continuously learn and grow under the guidance of experienced estimators. Work Environment This role operates primarily in an office environment, using computers, estimating software, and standard office applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare and manage cost estimates. The position also involves regular visits to construction and industrial sites to conduct surveys, assess existing conditions, and coordinate with field teams. Work hours typically require a minimum of 10 hours per day, five to six days per week, to meet project and bidding deadlines. The work setting emphasizes collaboration with project managers, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors, and may involve occasional exposure to active construction areas where appropriate safety practices and attire are required. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tupelo, MS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $47.50/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
