Estimator Job Description The Estimator is a crucial part of our preconstruction team, responsible for preparing precise, comprehensive, and competitive cost estimates for civil construction projects, including earthwork, utilities, and site development. This full-time role, based in Eastern North Carolina, involves occasional travel for site walks and pre-bid meetings. Responsibilities Review drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, addenda, and bid documents to accurately define project scope and perform detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, grading, utilities, and concrete elements. Develop complete cost estimates, incorporating labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, trucking/hauling, bonds/insurance, permits, and general conditions. Utilize historical cost data, production rates, and current market pricing to ensure competitive bids. Identify constructability issues, scope gaps, and cost drivers, and prepare bid assumptions, inclusions, exclusions, and clarifications. Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing, ensuring scope alignment and competitive coverage. Support bid-day execution, final pricing reviews, and assist with proposal preparation, bid forms, and compliance documentation. Attend pre-bid meetings and site walks, maintaining organized estimate files and pricing backup. Assist with project handoff to operations, documenting scope and pricing assumptions clearly. Participate in post-project cost reviews and help maintain estimating databases and standard estimating procedures. Essential Skills 2+ years of estimating experience in civil construction, including sitework, utilities, grading, or heavy civil projects. Proficiency in interpreting civil construction plans, specifications, and contracts. Solid understanding of construction means and methods. Hands-on experience with HCSS HeavyBid or equivalent estimating software, and Agtek for earthwork takeoffs and mass-haul analysis. Proficiency with Excel and digital plan tools such as Bluebeam. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple bids under tight deadlines. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications 5+ years of experience in civil or heavy highway estimating is preferred. Experience with DOT and municipal projects, including unit-price bidding, is advantageous. A background in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or equivalent field experience is preferred. Work Environment The work environment involves a regional office setting in Eastern North Carolina, with occasional travel required for site visits and pre-bid meetings. The role utilizes various technologies and software tools, including HCSS HeavyBid, Agtek, Excel, and Bluebeam, to ensure accurate and efficient estimating processes. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Morrisville, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $41.00 - $62.50/hr.
