Job Description
Position Summary The Chief Estimator is responsible for leading all estimating and bidding activities for sitework and excavation projects within the division. This role provides strategic oversight of the estimating function, ensuring accurate, competitive bids while aligning with company growth and profitability goals. The Chief Estimator partners closely with company leadership and field operations to drive bidding strategy, optimize project selection, and oversee preconstruction through project handoff and execution. Key Responsibilities Lead and oversee all estimating activities for earthwork, grading, utilities, demolition, and site development projects Develop and implement bidding strategy, including project selection, risk evaluation, and pricing approach Review bid specifications, drawings, and contract documents to define scope, risks, and execution strategy Oversee and/or perform detailed quantity take-offs and cost estimates (labor, equipment, materials, trucking, subcontractors) Manage the full bid lifecycle, including invitations, pre-bid meetings, addenda review, and proposal submissions Analyze historical cost data, production rates, and market trends to drive accurate and competitive pricing Collaborate closely with the Superintendent and operations team to align estimates with real-world production methods and scheduling Lead preconstruction planning and ensure smooth project handoff to field teams Provide oversight and guidance on awarded projects, supporting cost control and execution strategy as needed Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and clients Assist in contract negotiations and strategic client interactions Establish and maintain estimating standards, processes, and best practices across the division Ensure all estimates and operations align with company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
Qualifications Experience:
8-15+ years in estimating, with significant experience in sitework and excavation Proven experience leading estimating efforts or teams Strong understanding of excavation methods, earthwork production, and site utilities Demonstrated ability to develop and execute bidding strategies Proficiency with estimating software Strong analytical, financial, and problem-solving skills Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational abilities Ability to manage multiple bids and priorities in a fast-paced environment Preferred Skills Experience with GPS modeling, 3D takeoffs, and digital plan review tools Familiarity with DOT, municipal, and private development projects Strong understanding of construction scheduling, cost control, and project lifecycle management Experience mentoring or managing estimators or preconstruction staff Compensation and Benefits Competitive salary commensurate with experience Paid time off and holidays Company provided vehicle and fuel card Health, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) Life insurance Additional benefits availableJob Type:
