Position Overview This is a skilled position as an experienced Estimator/Project Manager involving the preparation of quantity estimates using material, labor and overhead costs and management of projects that are awarded to the company. Also, this is a lead position involving bid market analysis, bid process administration, pursuit allocation and peer bid reviews. Key Estimating Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions) Analyze blueprints, specifications, proposals and other documents to prepare time, material, equipment, production and labor estimates. Prepare preliminary estimates for planning purposes and detailed estimates based on final plans and specifications. Consult with clients, vendors and others to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues. Maintain current and accurate information on prices from suppliers and contractors through direct contact and written materials. Prepare bid packages, estimates and analysis of subcontractor bids for projects of any size and complexity. Physically measure, assess the condition, and formalize estimates for commercial projects. Participate in the bidding process. Key Management Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions) Manage projects awarded from correspondence, scheduling, resource allocation, cost projections, and billing. Check daily cost sheets for correctness, compliance with estimated cost, and if over budget, find out why and report to management. Prior to job startup, review with the job superintendent the project plans, specifications and review the project startup list to ensure that each item is done, i.e. dig line has been contacted. Assist Estimating as available by performing field measurements determining sources. Check that foreman's job quantities are correct and submitted to Estimating; remember they will generate the invoice based on what you report. Maintain, in conjunction with the hot plant operator, adequate oil supplies and fuels to meet the project's needs.Review hot plant reports, crusher reports, job reports. Perform an on-going job and project cost projection monthly. Include narrative on unit cost progress as opposed to as estimated. Key Lead Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions) Maintain current accounts for all advertisement, estimating and biding platforms. Monitor market for all bid advertisements via Dodge, DOT, Municipal, AGC, Construct Connect, etc. Maintain Pipeline entry. Create a new bid record for all pursuits. Allocate pursuits amongst estimators according to assigned customer account, area and according to workload. Include the lead estimator. Coordinate allocation with construction manager for pursuits greater than $1 million. Review all department estimates which are less than $500 thousand. Perform regular B2W resource maintenance. Lead estimator for projects greater than $1 million. Handoff large or complex projects to the lead project manager. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management or another related field. Five years construction estimating experience and, separately, five years construction management experience is preferred; or an equivalent of education and experience will be accepted Work Requirements Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute, rate, ration, percent, land to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to type and use keyboards accurately and have knowledge of database software.
