- Mechanical Construction Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to lead estimating efforts for mechanical construction projects, including plumbing, HVAC, piping, and MEP systems.
The Senior Estimator will produce accurate, competitive bids by performing detailed takeoffs, pricing labor and materials, and coordinating subcontractor and vendor quotations. This role supports preconstruction, mitigates risk through thorough analysis, and helps drive profitable award decisions for medium to large-scale commercial and industrial projects. Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the full estimating process for mechanical construction projects (plumbing, HVAC, piping, and MEP systems) from initial RFQ to bid submission.
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs using On-Screen Takeoff and other takeoff tools; develop assembly and unit price estimates.
Prepare accurate, detailed bid proposals, cost breakdowns, and scope summaries for owners, general contractors, and internal stakeholders.
Solicit, evaluate, and coordinate subcontractor and vendor quotes; build and compare subcontractor scopes and pricing.
Analyze project drawings, specifications, change orders, and site conditions to identify risks, omissions, and value-engineering opportunities.
Develop contingency, escalation, and risk assessments to support bid strategy and decision making.
Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, field personnel, and business development teams to clarify scope and optimize pricing.
Maintain and update historical cost databases, unit price books, and estimating templates to improve estimating accuracy and consistency.
Present estimates and bid rationale to senior leadership and clients; participate in pre-bid meetings and post-bid reviews.
Mentor and train junior estimators and support staff, establishing best practices and quality control for estimating deliverables.
Track bid results and metrics, implement lessons learned, and continuously refine estimating processes and assumptions.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
7+ years of progressive experience in mechanical construction estimating, with demonstrated expertise in plumbing, HVAC, and MEP systems.
Proven experience using On-Screen Takeoff for quantity takeoffs; proficiency with estimating software (e.g., Sage Estimating, Trimble, Hard Dollar) and Microsoft Excel.
Strong knowledge of mechanical materials, assemblies, labor units, equipment, and construction means and methods.
Experience preparing competitive bids for commercial, institutional, and industrial projects; familiarity with bid bonds, performance bonds, and subcontract agreements.
Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and shop drawings with strong attention to detail.
Excellent analytical, negotiation, written, and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to clients and senior management.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple simultaneous bids and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness to visit job sites and attend pre-bid meetings as required; valid drivers license.
