Leadership Full Job Description Important Note:
After submitting an application, please send pictures of the projects you have completed. We are looking for fitter/fabricators for this position. We are hiring welders as well, but under a separate job posting. About Hammer Haag Steel At Hammer Haag Steel, you're more than an employee—you're part of a team that takes pride in building incredible things. We are a family-owned custom steel fabrication shop with 150 skilled team members who bring projects to life, from small precision jobs to massive builds like roller coasters and industrial machinery. Everything happens under one roof, including prefabrication, machining, fabrication, painting, and assembly, so you get to see the entire process from start to finish. We invest in our people as much as our capabilities, offering hands-on training, opportunities to learn new skills, and room to advance for those willing to put in the effort. With modern equipment, a wide range of projects, and a supportive team environment, your work here makes a visible impact every day. Who We're Looking For We're looking for a leader first. A Structural Fitter at Hammer Haag Steel is a senior-level role that sets the pace for the crew, solves problems early, and keeps projects moving safely, efficiently, and on schedule. The right candidate leads by example, earns respect, and can rally a team to meet production deadlines without sacrificing quality. They are confident reading fabrication drawings, making sound decisions on the shop floor, and clearly communicating fit-up requirements to welders and less experienced fabricators. If you're the person others naturally look to when a job needs to get done right, we'd like to talk with you. If you have a strong welding foundation, we are willing to train you to become a Structural Fitter. Job Responsibilities Fit-Up Preparation Review assigned work, ensuring all materials, drawings, and travelers are present. Verify part accuracy, weld preparations, and post-fabrication machining requirements. Identify parts needing pre-welding and coordinate with supervision. Set up workspace, fixtures, and equipment for safe, accurate fabrication. Communicate missing parts, print discrepancies, or unclear dimensions to supervision or project management. Fitting and Assembly Fit components per fabrication drawings and dimensional tolerances. Ensure all fit-up gaps meet code requirements or corrective instructions are followed. Mark weld details and apply part numbers as directed. Complete fit-up sign-off and coordinate secondary fitter verification. Final Review and Release Complete and sign the job traveler. Notify supervision or production control of completed parts. Confirm job readiness for welding, machining, or the next stage of fabrication. Required Skills and Qualifications Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and section views. Knowledge of AWS welding codes and fabrication tolerance standards. Strong understanding of structural and plate fabrication practices. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate discrepancies before they impact production. Physically able to handle steel components and safely use cranes, forklifts, and fabrication equipment. Reliable transportation is required. Preferred Skills and Qualifications Proven leadership abilities with the capability to motivate, organize, and lead a fabrication crew. Ability to rally a team around production goals while maintaining a positive, accountable work environment. Strong understanding of production scheduling and the ability to keep work progressing to meet project deadlines. Ability to interpret complex fabrication drawings and clearly explain prints, fit-up methods, sequencing, and tolerances to welders and less experienced fitters. Ability to identify problems early, make sound decisions, and communicate effectively with supervision and project management. Prior experience in structural and plate steel fabrication. Familiarity with AISC and AWS welding codes. Experience operating overhead cranes and forklifts. Experience coordinating with welders, machinists, and production personnel. Ability to perform tack welds if certified or permitted by company policy. Hammer Haag Steel is a Drug Free Facility. A drug test and background check will take place before a final offer of employment is given.
