Job Description

Job Summary The structural fitter lays out and fabricates metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and braces them in position within hull of vessel for riveting or welding. Lays out position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using a scribe and hand tools. Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines. Positions parts in hull of vessel, assisted by a Tacker-Helper. Aligns parts in relation to each other, using jacks, come-a-longs, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls. Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting. Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips. May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding. May bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts, utilizing the above-mentioned equipment. Responsibilities Fit and assemble steel and aluminum components according to blueprints and specifications Perform cutting, grinding, and shaping of materials using proper tools and safety practices Use alignment tools such as wedges, jacks, and turnbuckles to ensure accurate fitting Conduct layout work that meets quality and dimensional accuracy requirements Follow all safety protocols and contribute to a clean, organized work environment Coordinate with welders, supervisors, and inspectors to ensure compliance with standards Work independently or as part of a team to meet production goals Operate standard shipfitting tools and equipment efficiently and safely Maintain consistent productivity while following all workplace policies Skills & Requirements Minimum of 5 years of shipyard experience , including hands-on craft/trade work Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or has authorization to work in the USA. (proof of status required) Must pass a written and hands-on skill test to verify proficiency Ability to read and interpret blueprints, ship drawings, and technical documents Skilled in the use of hand tools, torches, grinders, magnetic drills, and related equipment Strong understanding of ship construction methods and structural fitting techniques Knowledge of OSHA standards and shipyard safety protocols Capable of working in confined spaces, at heights, and in physically demanding environments Willingness to work day shifts , including weekends or overtime when required Dependable with a strong work ethic and commitment to quality Join our dedicated team and bring your ship fitting expertise to a company that values safety, quality, and craftsmanship.
