Fitter Job Description This role focuses on reading and interpreting blueprints, accurately fitting and aligning steel components, and preparing materials for welding in a custom fabrication shop. You ensure precise layout, fit-up, and assembly of metal structures while maintaining high quality and dimensional standards in a fast-paced, hands-on environment. Responsibilities Read and interpret detailed blueprints and drawings to perform accurate layout and fit-up of steel components. Lay out, align, and fit metal components prior to welding, ensuring correct dimensions and tolerances. Use tape measures, gauges, squares, calipers, and other measuring tools to achieve precise fit-up. Prepare materials for fabrication, including cutting, grinding, beveling, and cleaning surfaces. Position, clamp, and secure parts to ensure accurate and stable assembly prior to welding. Inspect fit-ups and assemblies to verify they meet quality, structural, and dimensional requirements. Work closely with welders and other team members to complete custom fabrication projects according to specifications. Perform fitting work on steel for a blueprint reading and fit-up test as part of the qualification process. Handle and operate hand tools and fabrication equipment safely and efficiently. Maintain a clean and organized work area while following shop safety practices. Essential Skills Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings, including passing a blueprint reading test. Strong fitting skills on steel, including layout, alignment, and preparation of components for welding. 3-5 years of experience in fitting and fabrication, including blueprint reading and structural fit-up. Hands-on experience with MIG welding in a fabrication or structural environment. Experience working with flux core welding processes. Proficiency using hand tools and fabrication tools such as tape measures, gauges, squares, and calipers. Previous experience working in a custom weld shop or similar fabrication environment. Ability to inspect and verify fit-ups and assemblies against quality and dimensional standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications TIG welding experience is a strong plus, but not required. Background in structural fabrication and assembly work. Comfort working with various welding processes and adapting to custom project requirements. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. Ability to collaborate effectively with welders and other shop personnel. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based in a small custom fabrication and welding shop focused on made-to-order projects. The position operates on a first shift schedule, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The facility is not climate controlled, so temperatures can vary with the seasons, and the environment can be dusty and loud at times due to fabrication and welding activities. You work with steel components, MIG and flux core welding processes, and a range of hand tools and measuring equipment. Appropriate work attire and protective gear are required to ensure safety and comfort in this active shop setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Albany, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
