Full-Time Position Summary We are seeking a detail-oriented Structural Steel Fitter to join our shop fabrication team. In this role, you will be responsible for interpreting structural fabrication drawings, laying out components accurately, and assembling detail parts onto structural steel members. You will fit, square, clamp, and tack assemblies into place, preparing complete and dimensionally accurate work packages for final weld-out by production welders in accordance withAWS D1.1
standards. Key Responsibilities- Set up, adjust, and operate Dual Shield Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW-G) equipment based on material thickness and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Accurately attach parts to structural steel assemblies, ensuring proper fit-up, orientation, and joint alignment prior to handing off for final weld-out.
- Read and interpret complex structural fabrication detail drawings, assembly sheets, bill of materials, and standard AWS weld symbols.
- Perform precise layouts using measuring tapes, framing squares, levels, and center punches to establish centerlines, work points, and hole patterns.
- Secure and fit components using clamps, dogs, wedges, and bridge tackling as necessary to prevent distortion and maintain structural tolerances.
- Verify all overall dimensions, camber, squareness, and part locations prior to releasing assemblies to the welding team.
- Safely operate material handling equipment, overhead cranes, rigging, torches, grinders, and hand tools necessary for fitting operations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while complying with all OSHA and company safety standards. Qualifications & Requirements
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of structural steel fitting/layout experience in a structural fabrication shop environment.- Testing /
Certification:
Must be able to successfully pass or hold certification for EITHER anAWS D1.1
Structural Welding Code 2F test (Dual Shield FCAW) OR theAWS D1.1
Tack Welder Qualification Test.Drawing & Layout Proficiency:
Strong ability to read structural fabrication shop drawings, detail sheets, and interpret standard welding symbols.Math Skills:
Proficient in shop arithmetic, whole numbers, decimals, and fractional calculations/conversions down to 1/16".Required Personal PPE:
Must provide your own functional welding hood (fixed or auto-darkening), standard steel-toed work boots, and non-flammable/flame-retardant work attire (heavy denim or 100% cotton clothing). Physical Demands & Work Environment- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and maneuver around large structural steel beams, columns, and builtup assemblies for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs unassisted.
- Comfortable working in an active, industrial fabrication shop environment.
