Fitter / Combo Welder (TIG & MIG) Job Description This role is based in a custom metals fabrication shop that handles both large-scale contracts and small custom projects. You will work as a skilled combo welder and fitter, specializing in TIG welding on stainless and smaller mild steel components, and MIG welding on structural and high-stress parts. You will fit up and fabricate assemblies directly from blueprints, contributing to a variety of projects such as heat-treat housings, conveyor systems, and heavy equipment components. Responsibilities Perform high-quality TIG welding on stainless steel and smaller mild steel components, ensuring strong, clean, and precise welds. Carry out MIG welding on structural and high-stress parts, maintaining consistent weld quality and structural integrity. Fit up and fabricate parts and assemblies from blueprints, including layout, measurement, and preparation of materials. Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints accurately to determine dimensions, tolerances, and fabrication requirements. Set up welding equipment and tools for TIG, MIG, and flux core processes, and verify proper parameters for each job. Fabricate a wide range of metal products, including custom components, heat-treat housings, conveyor systems, and excavator buckets. Inspect completed welds and fabricated parts for quality, accuracy, and compliance with specifications, making adjustments as needed. Work collaboratively with a tight-knit team to meet production schedules and adapt to changing project priorities. Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow shop safety practices and procedures at all times. Support overtime and extended hours as needed, including Friday and Saturday work based on production demands. Essential Skills At least 5 years of prior experience fitting and welding stainless steel and mild steel using both TIG and MIG processes. Strong proficiency in TIG welding on stainless steel, with the ability to produce high-quality, aesthetically clean welds. Solid MIG welding skills for structural and high-stress applications, with a focus on durability and consistency. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings accurately. Experience with layout and fabrication, including measuring, cutting, and preparing materials from prints. Proficiency in fitting metal components to tight tolerances prior to welding. Hands-on experience in a fabrication environment working with mild steel and stainless steel. Capability to use flux core welding as needed for specific applications. Attention to detail and quality, ensuring fabricated parts meet specifications and standards. Ability to work full-time on a day shift schedule from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with overtime availability. You will primarily work a day shift from about 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with regular opportunities for overtime on Fridays and Saturdays depending on production requirements. The environment is hands-on and fast-paced, with frequent use of TIG, MIG, and flux core welding equipment, as well as standard fabrication tools for cutting, fitting, and layout. Shop attire is typical for a fabrication setting, with appropriate workwear and personal protective equipment to ensure safety and comfort while working with metals and welding processes.
