Job Title:
Structural Welder Job Description This role focuses on structural welding in and around pile driving operations for dock and heavy civil construction projects. You perform high-quality SMAW and FCAW welds on structural components, work from blueprints and construction plans, and support pile driving and concrete piling activities in an outdoor, field-based environment. Responsibilities Perform high-quality structural welds using SMAW and FCAW processes on a variety of structural and industrial components. Work near pile driving operations to support dock and heavy civil construction projects, maintaining strict safety and quality standards. Fit, align, and fabricate metal components for structural and industrial applications according to project specifications. Read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, heavy construction plans, and job specifications to plan and execute work accurately. Ensure all welds meet industry and project quality standards, including conducting or supporting inspections and making necessary adjustments. Safely operate fabrication equipment, power tools, and hand tools used in structural welding and fitting. Assist and coordinate with pile driving crews and other field personnel to support installation of concrete pilings and related structures. Apply knowledge of the pile driving process and heavy equipment operations to perform work safely around active machinery. Use basic carpentry skills and understanding of elevations to support layout, formwork, and structural alignment where needed. Communicate clearly with supervisors, team members, and project managers to convey information, report progress, and address issues promptly. Follow all safety procedures and site-specific access requirements, including obtaining and maintaining necessary site access credentials. Work effectively in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions while maintaining productivity and quality. Meet project deadlines by maintaining steady workflow and collaborating with the broader construction and welding team. Essential Skills Proven experience as a structural welder working on construction or civil/structural projects. Strong proficiency in SMAW (stick) and FCAW (flux-cored) welding processes for structural applications. Certified welder with current structural welding certification. Experience welding structures in and around pile driving operations, particularly on dock or marine-related projects. Hands-on experience working with concrete pilings in a heavy construction environment. Previous experience with, and understanding of, the pile driving process and the safe operation of heavy equipment in close proximity. Ability to read and understand heavy construction plans, blueprints, and welding symbols. Prior experience working on a pile driving crew in the field. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others to convey information and coordinate work. Comfort working outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions while maintaining safe and efficient work practices. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in carpentry and an understanding of elevations is a plus. Familiarity with civil and structural construction environments, including docks and marine structures. Ability to safely operate and maintain fabrication equipment and hand tools. Capability and willingness to obtain any required site access credentials (such as DBIDS) for secured work locations. Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate with project managers, pile driving crews, and other trades. Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a field-based, outdoor role working primarily on sites in and around the NN, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach areas. You typically work a daytime schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime opportunities as project needs require. The work takes place on active construction sites, often near pile driving operations and heavy equipment, and may include secured facilities that require specific access credentials. You can expect to work in all weather conditions and on uneven terrain, following site safety rules and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and work attire suitable for construction environments. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Virginia Beach, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50000.00 - $70000.00/yr.
