Norfolk, VA Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced 1st Class Shipfitter to join our shipyard team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in ship construction, repair, and modernization projects, with the ability to interpret blueprints, fabricate structural components, and perform complex fitting operations in a marine environment. The Shipfitter will be responsible for assembling, installing, and repairing structural components aboard naval, commercial, and industrial vessels while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
Read and interpret shipyard drawings, blueprints, sketches, and work specifications. Lay out, fabricate, assemble, and install structural steel components, bulkheads, foundations, decks, and hull sections. Measure, mark, and cut materials using hand tools, power tools, and burning equipment. Align and fit structural parts using jacks, wedges, clamps, chain falls, and other fitting equipment. Perform tack welding as required to secure components for final welding. Verify dimensions and tolerances to ensure compliance with specifications. Assist with ship repair, overhaul, and modernization projects. Work effectively with welders, supervisors, and other trades to complete assigned tasks. Maintain a safe work environment and follow all shipyard safety procedures and regulations.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum 3-5 years of Shipfitter experience in a shipyard, ship repair, or marine construction environment. Ability to read and interpret shipyard blueprints and structural drawings. Experience fitting and assembling steel structures aboard ships or marine vessels. Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and burning equipment. Ability to work from technical drawings with minimal supervision. Strong understanding of shipbuilding and ship repair processes. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening, if required.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and work in confined spaces. Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in varying weather conditions for extended periods. Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Pay:
