Campus Planning and Strategic Investment at NC State plays a vital role in optimizing the design and use of campus land, buildings, and infrastructure to support the university's mission. Through collaboration and data-driven analysis, the team ensures financial and environmental stewardship while planning for both current and future needs. As our next Landscape Architect, you'll help translate NC State's strategic vision into the physical spaces that bring it to life. General Scope of Duties Translate the strategic plans of the University into the physical facilities required to support them. Provide solutions for a broad range of landscape architectural and engineering planning issues essential to meeting the campus's development needs. Provide general project support for physical facilities planning efforts at NC State. Analyze, document, and develop physical planning projects, policies, procedures, and informal project designs aligned with the University's strategic goals. Consider and evaluate a wide range of multi-disciplinary factors, including social, economic, and environmental impacts, related to the development of the campus's physical facilities. Coordinate planning efforts with campus design professionals to ensure alignment with long-range physical planning goals. Typical duties include: Developing physical facilities planning and design strategies for exterior campus spaces Conducting comparative studies and facilities program analyses Identifying and developing project alternatives Recommending actions to support implementation of the Physical Master Plan, with a focus on exterior spaces and site design Preparing feasibility studies and physical development plans for campus components such as stormwater management, infrastructure, transportation systems, pedestrian access, and other general planning and development needs Develop, monitor, and update project budgets to ensure alignment with project scope and funding requirements Verify budget adequacy for scope of work and review/approve consultant invoices in accordance with University standards Establish and maintain comprehensive project schedules and documentation, including meeting minutes key stakeholder communications
Other Work/Responsibilities:
Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters. This position requires the ability to: Anticipate issues and formulate options to resolve them Manage and prioritize multiple projects Use goals to guide actions and create detailed action plans Schedule people and tasks to achieve goals with minimal oversight Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education:
Education Bachelor's Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience Knowledge and application of NC building codes and relevant laws Understanding of building design and construction from site analysis to project closeout Experience with civil, landscape architectural, and utility systems Proven administrative and project management experience including permitting, specifications, and customer service Applied knowledge across design, engineering, public safety, technology, and legal compliance Extensive understanding of strategic/master planning, leadership, resource allocation, and community standards
Required Qualifications:
Analyze programmatic requirements to develop comprehensive project outlines, cost estimates, timelines, and planning strategies that align directly with site and budget constraints. Evaluate consultant design proposals and produce actionable design solutions Develop project outlines, cost estimates, timelines, and planning strategies Lead stakeholder meetings to establish clear expectations, drive consensus, and provide technical guidance to consultants and internal teams throughout the planning and review phases. Use AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other design software for infrastructure planning and documentation
Preferred Qualifications:
Licensure as a Professional Engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors, or as a Landscape Architect by the North Carolina Board of Landscape Architects Experience presenting complex project materials to advisory committees or large public groups Demonstrated ability to advise on strategic planning and institutional development Effective collaboration with senior leadership, contractors, and external stakeholders Expertise to prepare design plans and schedules for informal (small) projects
Required License or Certification:
Valid North Carolina Driver's License (or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire) Licensure as a Professional Engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors, or as a Landscape Architect by the North Carolina Board of Landscape Architects All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
