Job Description
Role Overview As a Firewood Splitter , you will be responsible for transforming raw logs into high-quality, ready-to-burn firewood for residential and commercial customers. This is a physically demanding role that requires operating heavy equipment, handling large logs, and maintaining a safe, organized work environment. Key Responsibilities Operate high-volume hydraulic log splitters and wood processors to break down hardwood and softwood logs into consistent, sellable sizes. Safely and proficiently use industrial-grade chainsaws to buck oversized or awkwardly shaped logs into manageable lengths. Load heavy logs and rounds onto the splitter's feeding mechanism, either manually or with mechanical equipment like log lifts or skid steers. Manage the outfeed of split wood, guiding it onto conveyor belts or into designated sorting bins for seasoning and storage. Stack split firewood neatly and securely in bays or on pallets, ensuring proper airflow for drying and maximizing yard space. Perform and document routine pre-operational checks and preventative maintenance on all processing equipment (greasing fittings, checking hydraulic fluid, cleaning air filters). Maintain a clean, organized work area by clearing debris, sawdust, and bark. Identify and sort different wood species (e.g., oak, maple, birch, ash) according to company standards and customer orders. Assess log quality, discarding pieces with excessive rot, disease, or pests to maintain product standards. Adhere to all safety protocols , wearing and maintaining required PPE (steel-toed boots, safety glasses, chaps, hearing protection). Required Skills & Qualifications Proficiency in operating hydraulic log splitters and chainsaws. Strong physical stamina and ability to lift heavy logs. Basic mechanical knowledge for equipment maintenance. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Attention to detail and commitment to safety. Teamwork and ability to follow safety procedures.
