Position Description The Laborer position supports underground telecommunications construction operations by assisting with site preparation, restoration, and day-to-day field tasks. Individuals in this role are able to safely set up and take down job sites, operate small tools and equipment under supervision, and perform essential duties to support drill and restoration crews. Core Responsibilities Prepare, set up, and tear down job sites using proper signage, cones, and barricades. Load, unload, and distribute tools, materials, and equipment according to work plans. Assist with potholing, locating utilities, conduit placement, and backfill operations. Operate small hand and power tools safely and effectively under direction. Support drill and restoration crews with day-to-day production needs. Maintain organized work areas, vehicles, and equipment. Follow all Universal Services safety standards, reporting any hazards immediately. Participate in daily tailgate meetings and ongoing job-specific training. Required Qualifications & Experience Valid driver's license and current DOT medical card. Successful completion of the Laborer - In Training program or equivalent experience. Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions. Basic understanding of safe work practices and job site operations. Preferred Experience Previous experience in underground utility, construction, or telecommunications work. Familiarity with small construction tools, equipment, and traffic control setup. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Physical Demands & Competencies Ability to lift and carry 50-60 lbs. regularly. Frequent standing, bending, shoveling, and repetitive physical movements. Must maintain awareness around heavy equipment and live traffic environments. Demonstrates reliability, attention to detail, and willingness to learn. Work Environment This position works outdoors year-round in all weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow. Work may involve exposure to mud, uneven surfaces, traffic, and utility hazards. Proper PPE and adherence to safety protocols are required at all times. Work Schedule This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Typical schedule is Monday-Friday, with flexibility required for evenings, weekends, or overtime as dictated by project demands or weather. Regular and punctual attendance is an essential function of the role.
Training & Development Expectations New Hire Development:
Complete all Universal Services safety and operational training modules within the first 90 days. Demonstrate proficiency in site setup, tool use, and safe operation practices. Actively seek mentorship from experienced crew members and foremen.
Ongoing Development:
Participate in continuous skill-building, equipment training, and safety refreshers. Demonstrate readiness for advancement to Laborer II through performance reviews and supervisor feedback.
