Gas Service Technician MDM Chimney Solutions Halethorpe, MD Job Details Full-time | Contract 23 hours ago Benefits Paid training Paid time off On-the-job training 401(k) matching Opportunities for advancement Tools provided Qualifications In-person customer service Company vehicle operation Driver's License Appliance repair HVAC Gas Fitters License Mechanical troubleshooting Full Job Description About the role We're hiring a gas-focused service and troubleshooting technician to own the day-to-day gas fireplace work at MDM Chimney Solutions — diagnostics, service calls, repairs, and installs across gas inserts, direct-vent units, B-vent fireplaces, and log sets. This is a real craft role, not a glorified clean-and-go. If you've ever spent forty-five minutes chasing an intermittent pilot only to find a sooted-up thermopile, you'll fit right in here. The person we hire will work alongside Mike, our senior gas technician, who has been running this side of the business for years. Mike is moving toward operations and people development, and the goal is for this new hire to grow into ownership of the gas service workflow — with Mike actively leveling them up early on. That means real mentorship, real autonomy as you earn it, and a clear runway. About MDM Chimney Solutions We're a locally-owned chimney and fireplace company serving homeowners across Baltimore, Catonsville, Halethorpe, Ellicott City, and Howard County. We've built our reputation the slow way — by doing careful, honest work in our neighbors' homes and being the company a customer calls back five years later when they want it done right. We don't oversell, we don't cut safety corners, and we don't tolerate sloppy diagnostics. What you'll do Diagnose and repair gas fireplaces, inserts, and log sets — pilot, ignition, valve, thermocouple/thermopile, blower, and gas-train issues Perform scheduled service and safety inspections on gas hearth appliances, including draft, spillage, and CO checks Install new gas inserts and direct-vent units to manufacturer spec and applicable code Communicate findings clearly to homeowners — explain what's safe, what's not, and what it'll take to fix it without scaring people or hiding things Work alongside Mike on larger projects early on; transition into owning the gas service schedule as you ramp Who we're looking for — two paths in Path 1 — Already in the hearth world: NFI Gas certified, finished hearth tech with two or more years of independent gas service experience. You can walk into a no-light call and have it diagnosed before the second cup of coffee. Path 2 — Strong HVAC / mechanical with gas-line experience: You've run gas line, you understand combustion and venting, and you want to grow into hearth work. We'll invest in NFI Gas certification and pair you with Mike for the hearth-specific learning curve. Strong mechanical instincts and customer-facing maturity matter more than a hearth resume. Required either way Valid MD driver's license, clean driving record, willingness to drive a company vehicle Comfortable working in attics, crawl spaces, on ladders, and on roofs Plain-spoken with homeowners — we're invited guests in people's houses Willingness to be on a rotating on-call schedule during heating season Maryland compliance — being straight with you Gas-line work in our service area may require licensed gas-fitter status or coverage under MDM's master contractor license, depending on jurisdiction (Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Howard County each have their own quirks). If you're already a licensed MD gas fitter, great — say so when you apply. If you're not, we'll talk through it: in some cases we can have you operate under our license; in others, we'll help you get licensed. We'd rather sort this out honestly up front than discover a problem on a job. Compensation & benefits Pay is competitive and based on credentials and experience — NFI-certified finished hearth techs land at the top of our range; HVAC-to-hearth trainees start lower with a clear ramp as you certify and ramp up. Benefits include paid time off, a health stipend, a 401(k) with company match, and MDM covers your NFI Gas certification if you don't already hold it. MDM provides all company-issued tools, vehicle, fuel, and PPE — no out-of-pocket tool investment required. How to apply Email a short note and your resume to — tell us which path you're coming in on (already-certified hearth tech or HVAC-to-hearth), your MD gas-fitter status if you have one, and a sentence on what kind of crew you want to work with. Local applicants only.
