Job Title:
Equipment Operator - Scrap Yard Job Description This role supports the Team by safely operating equipment and assisting with daily yard and production activities in a busy steel, metal, and auto recycling facility. You will handle materials, complete basic documentation, perform routine equipment checks and cleaning, and help maintain a safe, clean, and compliant scrap yard environment while working primarily outdoors. Responsibilities Safely operate skid steers and forklifts in close proximity to personnel, equipment, and the public. Support the Shredder Team with daily yard and production activities, including material handling and movement. Complete daily work logs accurately and track completed work and materials handled. Perform daily inspections of equipment and vehicles, including checking oil, water, fuel levels, and identifying leaks or damage. Conduct routine maintenance on equipment as directed and promptly report repair needs to supervisors. Maintain a safety‑first mindset by identifying unsafe conditions or practices and speaking up to prevent incidents. Ensure the facility, grounds, and equipment remain clean, organized, and compliant with environmental regulations. Perform general facility upkeep such as sweeping, cleaning, and removing debris from work areas. Move materials and scrap metal throughout the yard to support production and picking activities. Load and unload shipments and assist with production and picking tasks as needed. Dispose of trash and debris using sweeping, shoveling, and other manual methods. Clean equipment using pressure washers and other basic cleaning tools. Maintain a professional and courteous attitude when interacting with coworkers, supervisors, and the public. Perform additional duties as assigned to support overall yard operations. Essential Skills Approximately 1 year of experience working in an outdoor environment operating skid steer equipment. Approximately 1 year of experience safely operating forklifts in a yard, construction, or industrial setting. Experience performing general labor in physically demanding, outdoor environments such as construction, landscaping, or scrap yards. Ability to safely work around heavy machinery, moving equipment, and the public. Ability to complete basic daily work logs and track materials accurately. Strong safety awareness and willingness to speak up about unsafe conditions or practices. Ability to perform cleaning and janitorial duties such as sweeping, shoveling, and debris removal. Ability to follow instructions, support production activities, and work effectively as part of a team. English language skills sufficient to understand safety instructions and communicate with supervisors and coworkers. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in general construction, landscaping, or similar outdoor labor is highly beneficial. Experience in janitorial or facility cleaning duties in an industrial environment is a plus. Bilingual Spanish/English communication skills are preferred. Comfort working in environments with loud noise, dust, and heavy equipment operation. Willingness to learn additional yard and production tasks and take on new responsibilities over time. Work is physically active and primarily outdoors, often in varying weather conditions, and includes regular interaction with production staff and yard personnel. The site operates as a busy industrial facility where safety procedures and personal protective equipment are essential. Dress code requires steel‑toe shoes, long pants, and a plain t‑shirt or sweater, with a safety vest worn as the outer layer; the vest is provided by the company. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oakland, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $25.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
