Hiring Compensation Range:
Grade 102($26.66 per hour - $29.86 per hour), starting pay will be based on experience and qualifications, with higher placement possible for well-qualified candidates.

East & West End District positions available (including Deep Creek, Norwood & Egnar shops) Position Summary The Full-time, non-exempt Heavy Equipment Operator performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties associated with the operation of road construction equipment and the repair, maintenance, and construction of County roads, bridges and right-of-ways. Performs mechanical repairs on equipment as required. This position is classified as a safety sensitive position by the Department of Transportation (DOT). The position will report directly to the District Supervisor, Lead Worker and/or Senior Equipment Operator and will be classified at a Grade 102. As a full-time position, the Heavy Equipment Operator is eligible for County-sponsored insurance and benefit plans as summarized in the SMC Summary of Benefits, subject to applicable waiting periods. The position will be primarily based out of an Assigned County Shop located in San Miguel County.
Supervision Received :
Receives direct supervision from a Road and Bridge District Supervisor, Lead Worker, and/or Senior Equipment Operator.
Supervision Exercised :
This position possesses no supervisory responsibilities. Candidates must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Pre-employment and random drug tests are also mandatory. Job Description The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required. San Miguel County retains the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of the job at any time. Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operates equipment including pickups, single axle trucks, tandem axle trucks, tractor-trailers, rollers, water tankers, mowers, sweepers, loaders, backhoes, excavators, snowplows, sanders, motor graders, dozers, scrapers, paving equipment, and other construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Performs a variety of road maintenance tasks involving the operation of the equipment stated above and manual labor tasks, including pothole repair, concrete repair, asphalt overlays, culvert repair and maintenance, bridge repair, shoulder maintenance, ditch maintenance, shoveling, raking, fence construction, tree trimming, etc.
  • Responds to emergency situations including, but not limited to, blizzards, fires, floods, and other disasters, including work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
  • Performs snow and ice removal, which includes the application of anti-icing and deicing materials, including work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
  • Assists with placement of traffic control signage and provides traffic flagging during construction activities.
  • Performs daily inspection on equipment and vehicles used.
  • Provides good customer service. Collaborates with Supervisors to respond to customer service requests.
  • Helps ensure that all equipment is properly maintained. May perform equipment maintenance/fabrication.
  • Performs manual labor using various hand tools or equipment, including shovels, picks, jackhammers, power saws, and other tools.
  • Paints and sandblasts structures.
  • Installs and repairs guardrails, fencing, snow fence, culverts, and other road structures.
  • Establishes and maintains positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the required duties.
  • Transports heavy machinery and vehicles using lowboy to and from job locations.
  • Performs miscellaneous minor maintenance work and repairs on vehicles and equipment.
  • Collects debris along County roads.
  • Records vehicle maintenance and usage and keeps logs to record oil consumption, machine hours and projects, etc.
  • Actively and positively supports County and Departmental vision, mission, goals and objectives.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of and compliance with MSHA, DOT, Colorado 811 and other applicable industry safety regulations and procedures.
  • Understands principles, practices, and techniques of equipment operation required for the maintenance and construction of roads, bridges, drainage structures and facilities of the County Road System.
  • Knowledge of the safety rules, operation, maintenance, capacities, and limitations of construction and maintenance equipment; traffic safety procedures.
  • Safe work practices and work zone traffic control.
  • Geography of the County Road System

  • Street/highway maintenance, repair and construction and work zone practices.
  • Use and care of equipment used in the performance of job tasks.
  • Maintain and construct drainage structures, native and gravel surface roads, paved roads, and roadway drainage systems.
  • Measure distance accurately and lay out work precisely.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use software such as Microsoft Office products and Google Drive.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, safety rules and manuals, short correspondence, and memos and the ability to perform basic math.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and deviate from those instructions if the conditions warrant.
  • Apply problems solving skills in a variety of circumstances.
  • Perform work in emergency situations.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision and make independent decisions.
  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Education and Experience
  • High school graduate or equivalent G.E.D.
  • One (1) year of road maintenance experience including the operation of road and bridge construction equipment or equivalent and a minimum of two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties/responsibilities of the position will be considered. Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted State of Colorado Class "A" commercial driver's license with tank and air brake endorsements upon hire. Review of motor vehicle records is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
  • Applicants for this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • For those positions designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a pre-employment DOT mandated drug screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required.
  • Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, and post-accident.
  • Obtain certifications in CPR, First Aid, Flagging, and MSHA, within 12 months of hire. Special Requirements
  • As part of your duties as a county employee, you may be called upon to perform duties outside your day-to-day activities in order to support county emergency operations. All county employees are required to complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within first 6 months of employment.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily pass a comprehensive, pre-employment criminal background and motor vehicle check. Probationary Period
  • As a county employee, this position is subject to a probationary period of six months.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing essential functions of this job. Persons in this position will, at times, be exposed and work in altitude, geographic and weather extremes including, high elevations exceeding 10,000 ft., heat, humidity, and cold. Working in highway traffic zones using hot and/or caustic materials will be required. Good sight and hearing acuity is required. This position requires work to be performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to my co-workers or others.
