June 30, 2026•The Landfill Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of heavy machinery on the landfill site to support daily operations. This role involves performing tasks such as waste handling, site maintenance, and material movement under the supervision of senior operators, lead operators, and supervisors. The Equipment Operator will have foundational knowledge and some experience operating heavy equipment, with the opportunity to learn and grow into a more advanced operator role over time. The example of duties listed below fulfill the minimum requirements of this role. Other duties as relevantly apply to the position may be assigned. This is a "mandatory testing" position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Safely operates a variety of heavy equipment, such as wheel loaders, compactors, dump trucks, and bulldozers under the supervision of senior operators, lead operators and supervisors. Performs tasks including moving waste materials, cover operations, and ancillary projects. Assists in compaction and leveling of waste and soil to maximize available space and ensure compliance with landfill design and operational requirements. Conduct daily pre-operation inspections of equipment to include checking fluid levels, tire pressure, safety features, and basic mechanical components. Report any mechanical issues or malfunctions to the maintenance team, and assist with basic maintenance tasks as needed, such as refueling, cleaning, or greasing equipment. Ensure that equipment is operated according to current safety and operational guidelines. Follow safety protocols and adhere to landfill operating procedures to ensure the safety of yourself, coworkers, and the public. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and actively participate in regular safety meetings and training. Ensure that all operations are conducted in accordance with environmental regulations, including proper waste handling and minimizing emissions. Work closely with senior operators, supervisors, and other staff to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner. Communicate any issues with equipment or operations to supervisors to ensure smooth workflow and resolve problems quickly. Assist in training or guiding less experienced staff or new operators when directed by senior operators. Support senior operators in more complex tasks and gradually gain knowledge of advanced machinery and operations. Maintain accurate records of work performed including equipment usage, cover material utilized, and any maintenance or inspection activities. Ensure equipment is operated in a productive and fuel-efficient manner. Take initiative to learn about different equipment and machinery used at the landfill. Participate in on-the-job training and educational opportunities to improve skills and advance in the heavy equipment operator role.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and at least three years of equipment operation or road construction experience, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Driver's License in the State of Residence Landfill Spotter Certification within 6 Months Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics (KSAO's): Applicable medium and heavy equipment Occupational hazards and safety precautions General equipment and vehicle maintenance principles Customer service principles Safe driving practices Providing customer service Caring for and operating motor vehicles and applicable equipment Preparing and maintaining a variety of records and logs Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Very Heavy Work:
Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and intense noises.
