Job Description:
The successful candidate will achieve appropriate asphalt density by maintaining set rolling patterns and maintain proper breakdown roller techniques to allow for smooth mat transitions.
Job Duties:
Check all fluids at the beginning of the engine startup for the day, continue to monitor gauges and fluid levels throughout the day during operation. Monitor the operation and function of the roller throughout the workday. Maintain an awareness of the unusual noises or operation and bring any exceptions to the attention of the supervisor. Perform light mechanical adjustments and/or assist mechanic in performing repair on equipment, assist with the lubrication and fueling of the roller. The ability to perform a variety of task which may include compacting asphalt as well as assist related crew in laying asphalt, dumping trucks, or other such duties in site preparation. Communicate clearly with inspectors or outside agents during operations to ensure asphalt densities are being achieved. Continuously evaluate asphalt mat for deficiencies or imperfections during laydown process. The ability to operate the roller in a manner to assure the safety of personnel around the equipment. Operate the roller on terrain and fill/placed materials as to not cause damage to the equipment or injury to the operator, operate the roller around structures, curb and gutter, tools, and traffic as not to cause damage. Keep roller in a clean and orderly condition. Follow all state/federal safety rules and company policies and procedures. Assist crew with laborious work when not operating roller. Perform other related duties as assigned. Operate roller in accordance with all safety mandates (ROPS, seatbelts, three point contact for entrance & exit of machine, etc.). Maintain professional conduct at all times. Complete all assigned Learning Management System training initiatives.
Experience & Knowledge:
Minimum 1 year experience operating a Breakdown Roller. Ability to accurately assess asphalt mat conditions throughout the process. Simple reference to use of machine gauges and operating levers where little interpretation is required.
Initiative & Ingenuity:
Exercise judgment to comply with instructions or prescribed routines, methods or practices involved in the making of minor decisions within the limitations of standard methods and procedures.
Physical Activity & Demand:
Position requires the ability to climb, to grasp, to push and pull, to bend at the waist, to walk and stand for long periods of time and to lift up to 50 pounds. Position requires the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communications.
Mental & Visual Demand:
Continuous mental and visual attention required to avoid hazards and mistakes. Responsibility for

Working Conditions:
Disagreeable working conditions with continuous exposure to dust, dirt, seasonal temperature variances, wet cement, with several elements continuously present to the extent of being objectionable.
Hazards:
Injuries should they occur, would result in partial incapacitation due to cuts and sprains.
