JOB PURPOSE
An employee in this position works under the close supervision of the Foreman and Public Services Director and in accordance with established polices and procedures; the incumbent is responsible for operating and maintaining heavy equipment and ensuring public safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1.
Plows and treats roads, airport, and other Town-owned properties. 2. Attaches plows, wings, and sanders to trucks. 3. Clears sidewalks, pathways, and entrances with hand shovel and snow blower as needed. 4. Loads and spreads sand by hand or front-end loader. 5. Paints roadway markings, equipment, and buildings. 6. Replaces cutting edges. 7. Salts and sands sidewalks and roads. 8. Sweeps streets, sidewalks, and parking lots. 9. Places asphalt and cement on roadways, sidewalks, and parking lots. 10. Installs and maintains curbing. 11. Installs, services, and repairs culverts. 12. Seeds, hays, mows, maintains grassed areas. 13. Installs and maintains hardscaping and repairs minor masonry. 14. Performs minor repairs and maintenance to town buildings, including roofs and windows. 15. Collects and removes trash, recyclables from dedicated working areas. 16. Assists in placing trash receptacles and picnic tables as needed. 17. Routine service and maintenance on department vehicles and equipment. 18. Follows safety protocols at all times including the wearing of all safety clothing, shoes, and gear, ear and eye protection as required and directed. 19. Maintains knowledge of all applicable federal, state, and local ordinances as it pertains to work performed by attending educational workshops; and practicing skills. 20. Supports the Town's safety and health policies by attending required safety training programs; reports all accidents and suspected near misses. 21. Fulfills job functions by participating as an active member in training and participates on Town's task forces and performs any and all other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
PHYSICAL STANDARDS
The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by the incumbent to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to meet these physical standards. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, work up to 25 feet, reach overhead, talk, and hear. The employee is required to use hands to operate a snowplow, road and sidewalk sander, shovel, snow blower, front end loader, grader, dump truck with wing, chain and pole saws, paint brushes, rollers, 2-inch fire hose, 150+psi pressure washer, broom, small hand tools, both electric and non-electric, and pump sprayer. The employee must occasionally lift up to 75 pounds and move up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job require close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is required to operate a motor vehicle, dump truck, loader, backhoe, compressor, snowplow, snow blower, and jackhammers. Occasionally could use welding equipment. This position is subject to random drug/alcohol tests.

The work is performed mostly outdoors in all seasons. Exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all type of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces; it may be imperative for incumbents to work extended hours including evenings and weekends for emergency circumstances such as weather and infrastructure.
REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR THE POSITION
  • high School Diploma or equivalent required
  • valid CDL class B driver's license required or able to obtain one within six (6) months of employment.
  • demonstrated ability to follow directions, work independently, with contractors, municipal employees, and the general public.
  • has excellent communications skills.
  • working knowledge of equipment and vehicles used in the performance of the duties.
  • ability and willingness to work beyond normal hours to accomplish certain tasks.
  • ability to pass a pre-employment physical.
  • available for call-in work, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • accident and moving violation convictions free driving record for the preceding three (3) years.
  • ability to detect need for mechanical servicing of equipment.
  • ability to understand and carryout oral instructions and to work independently in the performance of routine duties.
  • ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other town employees.
EXPERIENCE
  • one (1) year minimum experience work in excavation construction, a public works department, or building trades required; longer work experience preferred.
