Warehouse Yard Switcher Role Overview The Warehouse Yard Switcher is a safety-critical position responsible for the safe, efficient, and accurate movement, securement, and positioning of trailers within the yard and at dock doors. This role directly protects employees, equipment, facilities, and product by ensuring trailers are moved, staged, and secured in accordance with PBV safety standards and approved operating procedures.
The primary responsibility of this position is yard switching and dock-to-yard/yard-to-dock trailer operations in support of Transportation, Production, Warehouse, and Vertique operations. Secondary warehouse tasks may be assigned as needed, provided they do not interfere with yard, dock, or trailer safety responsibilities. Duties may vary by facility and business needs. Day-to-Day Responsibilities Efficiently spot, move, and position empty and loaded trailers between docks and designated yard locations. Demonstrate strong backing skills, including blind-side and tight-space maneuvers, while minimizing risk to people, product, and infrastructure. Ensure trailers are properly aligned, secured, and dock-ready prior to loading or unloading. Maintain orderly trailer placement to support efficient yard flow and dock utilization. Confirm dock status and receive clear authorization before moving any trailer. Do not move trailers when dock safety devices are missing, damaged, engaged, or when trailer status is unclear. Operate yard switcher tractors safely in accordance with PBV policies and OSHA requirements. Perform daily inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns. Maintain awareness of pedestrians and equipment traffic. Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions exist. Valid driver's license required. CDL Class A preferred. Minimum of six (6) months of verifiable yard switching or tractor-trailer experience. Basic computer and HMI skills. Able to pass PBV Yard Switcher Training and Skills Test. Ability to climb/enter/exit the Yard Switcher Cab. Ability to see in poor outside conditions such as rain and low light. Ability to interface and use warehouse and yard management software and technology. Ability to work extended shifts as needed. Good recordkeeping, written and verbal communication skills.
