JOB DESCRIPTION
DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves the responsibility for safe and efficient operation of various types of heavy motor equipment used in maintenance and construction projects and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations. This class is distinguished from the Motor Equipment Operator in that there is greater responsibility for operating care and employees must have specific knowledge of the operation of equipment. Heavy equipment for the purpose of this classification includes but is not limited to power shovels, bulldozers, graders, rollers, cranes, loaders and sweepers. Duties are performed under general supervision allowing for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Direct supervision may be exercised over the activities of Motor Equipment Operators and Laborers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
(Illustrative Only) Operates power shovel, bulldozer, power grader, crane, sweeper, roller and other types of heavy equipment in the construction and maintenance of roads; Operates heavy automotive equipment in connection with the removal of snow and in the transportation of stone, gravel, and supplies; Operates heavy equipment in connection with cutting banks, cutting and filling ditches, removing stumps and other related tasks; Operates a tractor mower in connection with mowing grass and/or removing brush from roadsides or other locations as needed; May perform preventative maintenance on assigned equipment; Performs a variety of manual tasks such as loading and unloading vehicles, digging ditches, cutting trees and brush, cleaning culverts, shoveling snow, painting, raking blacktop, and road and sewer maintenance work; Performs other duties as assigned
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment; Good knowledge of the geography of the area; Ability to service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; Ability to follow oral and written instructions; Ability to plan and supervise the work of Motor Equipment Operators and Laborers. Mechanical aptitude; Ability and willingness to respond to emergencies and to work outside under adverse weather conditions; Dependability; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
a) Graduation from high school, or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; AND b) One (1) year of experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment; OR c) Two (2) years of experience in the operation of light automotive equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS
Must possess a NYS CDL License, Class B or higher at the time of appointment and must maintain said license in good standing throughout employment in the position. County Requirement Applicants Must possess a NYS CDL License, Class A or higher at the time of appointment and must maintain said license in good standing throughout employment in the position.
NOTE:
Incumbents may be required to acquire additional license endorsements at any time during the tenure of employment in this position if the nature of the work deems it necessary.
