Hydrovac Operator Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement Required Position Summary We are seeking an experienced, safety-oriented Hydrovac Operator to join our field operations team. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of hydro excavation equipment to perform non-destructive digging, utility daylighting, trenching, and related excavation services around underground utilities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong equipment operation skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently or as part of a crew in a fast-paced construction and utility environment. This is a full-time, hands-on field position that requires a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker (N) endorsement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Operate hydrovac trucks and associated systems (high-pressure water, vacuum, boom, and debris tank) to excavate soil safely around underground utilities, pipelines, and other sensitive infrastructure. Perform daylighting, potholing, trenching, slot trenching, and debris removal in accordance with project specifications and client requirements. Conduct thorough pre-trip, during-operation, and post-trip inspections of the hydrovac unit, including water systems, vacuum systems, hydraulics, brakes, lights, and safety equipment; document findings and report deficiencies promptly. Safely drive and position the hydrovac truck to and from job sites, adhering to all federal, state, and local traffic laws as well as company safe driving policies. Maintain accurate daily paperwork, including job tickets, time sheets, equipment logs, material usage, and incident reports. Follow all applicable safety regulations and company protocols, including OSHA standards, utility locate procedures, traffic control, confined space awareness (where applicable), and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Assist with routine maintenance, cleaning of the debris tank and water systems, and minor field repairs to keep equipment in optimal working condition. Communicate effectively with supervisors, project managers, clients, utility representatives, and fellow crew members regarding job progress, site conditions, and safety concerns. Identify and mitigate potential hazards on site, including underground utilities, overhead power lines, traffic, and environmental conditions. Support other field operations as needed and maintain a professional representation of the company at all times. Required Qualifications Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker (N) endorsement — mandatory. Current valid DOT medical card. Minimum of 1-2 years of hands-on experience operating hydrovac or vacuum excavation equipment (candidates with strong related experience operating vacuum trucks, tanker trucks, or heavy equipment in construction/utility settings may be considered). Clean driving record with no major violations in the past 3-5 years. Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and physical assessment. Strong understanding of underground utility locating procedures and safe excavation practices around gas, electric, water, sewer, and telecommunications lines. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods. Reliable transportation to the yard or designated meeting points and willingness to travel to job sites within the service area (occasional overnight travel may be required depending on project needs). Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to perform routine equipment checks and minor maintenance. Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to complete required documentation accurately and on time. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Preferred Qualifications 2+ years of dedicated hydrovac operator experience with recognized equipment brands (e.g., Tornado, Vac-Con, Super Products, GapVax, or equivalent). Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and pipeline safety regulations. Experience working on utility, municipal, oil & gas, or telecommunications projects. First Aid/CPR certification and/or additional safety training (e.g., confined space, excavation competent person, traffic control). Familiarity with GPS, electronic job tickets, or fleet management systems. Ability to train or mentor less experienced operators. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, crouch, and reach while operating equipment and performing site work. Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50-75 lbs occasionally and 25-50 lbs frequently. Ability to work in confined spaces or elevated positions when required. Exposure to outdoor elements, noise, vibration, dust, and potential contact with soil, water, and construction materials. Must be comfortable working near active roadways, construction sites, and underground utilities.
