Job Description
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Operates equipment and machinery and performs manual labor as directed by the Road & Bridge Engineer/Administrator or other designated Road & Bridge personnel. Directs crew members in the support of construction tasks.ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS 1.
Reports to: Crew Chief and/or Superintendent 2.Directs:
This is a non-supervisory position. May serve as lead person of a crew to direct less experienced employees for job completion 3.Other:
Has regular contact with other county employees and, occasionally, with the general publicESSENTIAL DUTIES
EXAMPLES OF WORK Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: As a member of the road crew, will assist in the maintenance and construction of road and drainage projects using hand-held equipment Operate vehicles and equipment as directed. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, tractor-trailer, oil distributer, chip spreader, sweeper, roller, brush chipper, mower, dump truck, front-end loader, A-boom, pot-patcher, culvert cleaner, Backhoe and front-end loader Supervisory skills, as needed to complete assigned tasks Understanding of construction methods and operations to complete tasks in an efficient and safe manner Assist with traffic control for road and drainage projects Assist with clean-up of project sites, Road & Bridge facilities, equipment, machinery and vehicles Assist with maintenance of equipment, machinery and vehicles Attend departmental meetings Maintain after-hour availability for emergency construction and/or repairs Attend technical and safety training as appropriate and available Assist in training of other employees in proper operation of equipment, maintenance of equipment, safety procedures and county policies Other duties as assignedREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Methods, practices, equipment and materials used in the maintenance of roadways
- Knowledge of provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of vehicles
- Knowledge of the safe operation of machinery and equipment used in the construction industry Ability to :
- Follow directions
- Direct other Road & Bridge personnel, as needed, to complete assigned tasks
- Maintain an awareness of surroundings in a construction zone
- Perform assigned tasks in a safe manner
- Understand the organization and operation of the Road & Bridge system
- Communicate clearly and consistently
- Work independently in the absence of supervision
- Interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, department heads and employees Experience and Training
- Valid Texas Commercial Drivers' License
- High school graduation, or its equivalent, and ability to read and write

- Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, and sitting for prolonged periods of time Frequently operates motor vehicle(s) and road construction equipment Ability to be on call and work overtime, if necessary Working Conditions The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
- Work is performed primarily in an outdoor setting
- In all weather conditions, including temperature extremes
- Work can be performed in emergency and stressful situations
- Individual may be exposed to hazards associated with floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and fires.
- Potential exposures include smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils
- The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts
- And is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals
- The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud
