Job Summary We are seeking a skilled Excavator Operator to join our pipe crews . The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in operating heavy machinery, particularly excavators, to perform various construction tasks. This role requires a strong understanding of mechanical operations and the ability to work efficiently on-site while adhering to OSHA safety regulations. It is important that this candidate have prior experience in working in a pipe crew installing sewer, storm and sanitary mains. Safely operate excavators and related heavy equipment for underground utility and site construction. Perform excavation and trenching for the installation of sewer, storm, and sanitary mains. Assist pipe crews with proper trench preparation, bedding, pipe placement, backfilling, and compaction operations. Excavate around existing utilities while exercising appropriate caution and following utility-marking requirements. Maintain proper trench grades, elevations, slopes, and depths according to plans, specifications, and direction from the Foreman. Safely load, move, and place soil, stone, pipe, and other construction materials. Perform backfilling and rough grading as required. Work closely with pipe layers, laborers, Foremen, and other equipment operators to maintain an efficient workflow. Conduct daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or mechanical issues promptly. Operate equipment in a safe manner around workers, structures, vehicles, utilities, and the public. Follow OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and all applicable job-site safety procedures. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Perform other duties related to underground utility construction as assigned. Required Qualifications Previous experience operating excavators in an underground utility or heavy construction environment. Prior experience working as part of a pipe crew installing sewer, storm, and sanitary mains is required. Ability to read and understand basic construction plans, grades, elevations, and utility layouts. Knowledge of proper excavation and trenching practices. Ability to work safely around existing underground utilities. Ability to communicate effectively with crew members and follow directions from the Foreman. Strong understanding of equipment safety and job-site safety procedures. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred. OSHA or other applicable safety training is a plus. Ability to work in confined or restricted work areas associated with underground utility construction. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind. Ability to maintain attention and situational awareness in a busy construction environment. Ability to perform physically demanding work safely and consistently throughout the workday. Work Environment This position is primarily performed outdoors on active construction sites. The employee may be exposed to heavy equipment, moving vehicles, dust, dirt, mud, noise, vibration, changing weather conditions, uneven terrain, and other typical construction-site hazards. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times as required by OSHA regulations and company policy. Safety Expectations Safety is an essential responsibility of this position. The Excavator Operator is expected to: Follow all OSHA regulations and company safety policies. Perform required pre-operation equipment inspections. Maintain awareness of personnel and hazards around operating equipment. Follow proper trenching and excavation safety procedures. Use required PPE. Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, equipment defects, and potential hazards to the appropriate supervisor. Participate in required safety meetings and training.
