An Operating Engineer or Heavy Equipment Operator drives and operates heavy equipment used in quarries, construction sites, landfills, refuse and recycling centers, or ports. Heavy Equipment may include, but is not limited to, bulldozers, excavators, paving equipment and pile drivers.
Yard-based with occasional job site support Position Summary The Loader / Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment to load, move, and stage landscape materials such as mulch, stone, soil, and aggregates. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate orders, fast turnaround times, and safe yard operations. The position requires strong attention to detail, equipment awareness, and a commitment to safety and productivity. Key Responsibilities Equipment Operation Operate loaders, skid steers, forklifts, and related heavy equipment to load customer vehicles and delivery trucks Move, stage, and organize materials throughout the yard Load materials accurately according to order tickets and customer specifications Assist with unloading inbound materials and supplier deliveries Yard Operations & Material Handling Maintain clean, organized material stockpiles and work areas Assist with measuring, weighing, or verifying quantities of materials Stage orders for scheduled deliveries and customer pickups Minimize material loss, spillage, and contamination Safety & Compliance Follow all company safety policies and procedures Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance needs Maintain safe distances from customers, vehicles, and coworkers Assist with maintaining OSHA and DOT safety standards Customer Interaction & Support Communicate professionally with customers during loading Assist walk-in customers with safe loading practices Coordinate with inside sales and yard staff to resolve order questions Yard Support Duties Assist with general yard tasks including cleanup, signage, and traffic flow Support snow removal, seasonal setup, or special projects as needed Help train new yard or equipment operators Qualifications Required Experience operating loaders, skid steers, forklifts, or similar equipment Strong attention to detail and ability to follow loading instructions Commitment to safety and proper equipment operation Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions Preferred Experience in landscape supply, construction materials, or related industry Valid equipment certifications or training CDL or familiarity working around CDL drivers (a plus, not required) Physical & Work Environment Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 lbs Ability to stand, walk, and operate equipment for extended periods Ability to handle various hand tools Work outdoors in heat, cold, dust, and varying weather conditions Fast-paced, safety-sensitive environment Key Success Metrics Accurate and timely loading Safe equipment operation and yard practices Reduced material waste and rework Positive customer feedback Equipment uptime and cleanliness Demonstrates a consistently positive and professional demeanor AAP/EEO Statement The Virginia Construction Group does not discriminate in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, membership in an employee organization, retaliation, parental status, military service, or other non-merit factor.
