Job Description
Help keep Wausau moving. Join our Public Works team! The City of Wausau is hiring Street Maintainers to join our Public Works team. If you enjoy hands-on work, operating equipment, and being part of the crew that keeps the community safe and running—this is a career you can take pride in. When a snowstorm hits, roads flood, or infrastructure needs repair—you're part of the crew that shows up. Your work keeps roads safe, supports emergency response, and serves the entire community. From clearing snow during major storms to maintaining roads and infrastructure year-round, this role is essential to daily life in Wausau. Apply soon! Pay, Schedule & Benefits $22.78/hour or higher depending on qualifications Monday-Friday | 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM Overtime paid at 1.5x after 8 hours/day 15 days of vacation annually 3 personal days + 10 paid holidays Generous sick leave Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension Health, dental, vision, life insurance & more This is a stable, full-time municipal role with strong benefits and long-term security. What You'll Do You'll be part of the team that keeps Wausau's streets, infrastructure, and public spaces safe and functional! Operate trucks, loaders, and a wide range of public works equipment Perform street maintenance, construction support, and repairs Assist with snow plowing, sanding, and storm response Work on projects involving asphalt, concrete, and drainage systems Respond to emergencies like snowstorms, flooding, or infrastructure issues Work alongside a team that supports multiple City departments No two days are the same—and what you do directly impacts the community. Equipment You'll Work With You won't be stuck doing just one thing. This role includes operating and working with: Dump trucks (single, tandem, tri-axle) Loaders, rollers, and backhoes Asphalt pavers and sweepers Snow blowers and plows Chain saws, jackhammers, and more
Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent Valid Driver's License Class A CDL with N endorsementPreferred:
Experience in construction, street maintenance, or similar field work What It Takes to Succeed Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions Comfort with physical work (lifting, bending, operating equipment) Willingness to respond to emergencies outside normal hours Strong teamwork and communication skillsIMPORTANT!
