Painter Job Description This role offers a 3-4 month summer assignment providing commercial and residential painting services across multiple Bay Area locations, with most projects based at a major university campus. You will perform a wide range of interior and exterior painting tasks, contributing to high-profile facilities and working closely with a coordinated field team on fast-paced, day-to-day assignments. Responsibilities Prepare interior and exterior surfaces for painting by sanding, scraping, and using hand sanders to ensure clean, smooth finishes. Apply paints, stains, and varnishes using brushes, rollers, and other painting tools to achieve consistent, high-quality results. Repair surfaces prior to painting, including performing plastering and sheetrock finishing to restore and level walls and ceilings. Mix and match paint to achieve required colors and finishes, following project specifications and existing color schemes when needed. Waterproof designated surfaces to protect structures from moisture and environmental damage. Refinish furniture such as chairs, bookcases, desks, and other fixtures as needed to match or enhance existing finishes. Set glass and apply putty where required as part of painting and finishing tasks. Paint signs and other designated surfaces according to project requirements. Occasionally hang wallpaper as part of interior improvement projects. Travel between multiple job sites in areas such as Mountain View, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Sunnyvale, with the majority of work at the university campus. Respond to daily work orders issued in the late afternoon for the following day and adjust plans accordingly. Follow safety practices on site, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to job site rules. Maintain and transport personal painting tools and materials, ensuring they are in good working condition and available at each job site. Work collaboratively with supervisors and crew members to complete projects on time and to the required quality standards. Essential Skills At least 3 years of recent commercial painting experience. Proficiency in interior painting for commercial and tenant improvement projects. Proficiency in exterior painting for commercial and multifamily settings. Experience working as a journeyman or apprentice painter in construction environments. Ability to perform surface preparation, including sanding, plastering, and sheetrock finishing. Skill in using brushes, rollers, and hand sanders for a variety of painting applications. Ability to mix and match paint colors accurately. Capability to waterproof surfaces as part of painting and finishing work. Experience refinishing furniture and fixtures such as chairs, bookcases, desks, and similar items. Ability to set glass and apply putty where required. Comfort working in tenant improvement and multifamily commercial environments. Reliable transportation to travel to various job sites. Ability to switch locations as needed based on daily work orders. Willingness and physical ability to work in all weather conditions. Openness to working overtime and flexible hours, including weekends, when required. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience painting in commercial, multifamily, and tech-related facilities. Background in tenant improvement projects, both interior and exterior. Familiarity with working on large institutional or campus environments. Ability to adapt quickly to changing job priorities and new assignments. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing clean, professional finishes. Capability to work efficiently with minimal supervision while maintaining quality. Comfort working on a coordinated team where daily staffing needs may change. Preparedness to bring and maintain a full set of personal painting tools and a grip bag with rollers, brushes, and buckets. Ability to plan ahead by bringing a packed lunch to remain on site throughout the workday. Why Work Here? You will gain valuable exposure to commercial and multifamily painting projects in a highly reputable, well-known Bay Area company environment, which can significantly strengthen your resume and support your long-term growth in the painting industry. The team culture emphasizes collaboration, support, and a positive work atmosphere, allowing you to learn from experienced professionals while contributing to visible, impactful projects. This assignment offers a strong platform to build your skills, expand your network, and enhance your experience on prominent, high-profile sites. Work Environment You will work primarily on a major university campus in Palo Alto, with additional assignments in surrounding Bay Area cities such as Mountain View, Menlo Park, and Sunnyvale. The role is based on active commercial building sites and tenant improvement projects, where you must be comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Typical hours are around 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for campus work, with the potential for overtime and flexible scheduling, including weekends, depending on project needs. Daily work orders are issued in the late afternoon for the following day, and staffing is adjusted accordingly, so flexibility and readiness to move between sites are important. You are expected to wear typical painting attire, including all-white long pants and long sleeves, and to use work boots as part of the required personal protective equipment. You will bring and use your own painting tools and grip bag, and because job sites may not allow time to leave campus, you should plan to bring a packed lunch and remain on site throughout the workday.
