    Marine Painter
  • Job Description
  • This role focuses on applying protective and decorative coatings to marine vessels in a shipyard environment while adhering to strict safety, quality, and industry standards. You work in confined spaces, follow established procedures, and ensure all surfaces receive complete and accurate coverage to meet inspection requirements and avoid rework.
  • Responsibilities
  • + Follow all safety rules and procedures required in a shipyard environment to maintain a safe working area for yourself and others.
+ Work safely and effectively in small, confined spaces on board marine vessels and within shipyard facilities. + Apply coatings in accordance with SSPC and NAVSEA standards to ensure compliance with industry and customer requirements. + Use brush and roller painting techniques with a flashlight and mirror to verify that all surfaces receive complete coverage and to prevent missed areas. + Inspect coated surfaces during and after application to identify and correct any deficiencies before formal inspections. + Work efficiently to complete assigned tasks within established schedules and budget constraints. + Operate power tooling and related equipment to prepare surfaces and support coating applications. + Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and serviceable condition. + Comply with all access and security requirements necessary to work in shipyards and on military installations.
  • Essential Skills
  • + Demonstrated experience working in a shipyard environment.
+ Ability to follow and adhere to all safety rules typical of shipyard operations. + Ability to work in small confined spaces for extended periods as required by the job. + Experience in power tooling and coating applications for marine or industrial surfaces. + Capability to apply coatings in accordance with SSPC standards. + Capability to apply coatings in accordance with NAVSEA standards. + Skill in using brush and roller painting methods to achieve complete and even coverage. + Ability to use a flashlight and mirror while painting to ensure all surfaces are properly coated. + Ability to gain and maintain access to shipyards and military installations, including meeting any associated security requirements. + Strong attention to detail to avoid failed inspections and minimize re-work. + Ability to manage time effectively and work within schedule and budget constraints.
  • Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • + Previous experience working on marine vessels or in marine maintenance environments. + Familiarity with surface preparation techniques for coating applications. + Comfort working in environments that may involve varying temperatures, noise levels, and physical demands. + Reliability and consistency in following established processes and quality standards.

  • Work Environment
  • You work primarily in shipyards, including large industrial facilities and southside yards, where marine vessels are built, maintained, and repaired.
The environment includes typical shipyard conditions such as working in and around vessels, confined spaces, and elevated areas, with exposure to noise, varying weather conditions, and industrial equipment. You use power tools, brushes, rollers, flashlights, and mirrors as part of daily tasks, and you follow established safety protocols and access requirements, including those associated with military installations.

  • This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newport News, VA.
  • Pay and Benefits
  • The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your jobclassification and length of employment.
