Job Title:
2nd Shift Brazer Job Description The 2nd Shift Brazer assembles and brazes large diameter copper and steel piping systems used in natural gas, chiller, and industrial HVAC applications. This role focuses on heavy industrial brazing, working with pipe from 1 inch to 4 inches in diameter, and performing complex joints in all positions at controlled high temperatures. The position requires strong technical expertise in heat control, filler material selection, and joint preparation to ensure safe, compliant, and structurally sound piping systems. Responsibilities Assemble and braze copper, steel, and alloy piping systems ranging from 1 inch to 4 inches in diameter for natural gas, chiller, and industrial HVAC applications. Braze copper to copper, copper to steel, and copper to brass joints in accordance with industrial standards and procedures. Perform brazing operations on piping, coils, compressors, valves, and fittings used in HVAC and chiller systems. Complete brazed joints in multiple positions, including uphill, downhill, and horizontal orientations, while maintaining consistent quality. Heat joints to controlled brazing temperatures typically between 600°C and 900°C (1,100°F-1,650°F), depending on base metals and filler materials. Apply silver-based and copper-phosphorus filler alloys with melting ranges between 620°C and 780°C (1,150°F-1,435°F) to achieve proper filler flow and penetration. Monitor flame characteristics and heat distribution to ensure proper filler flow and to prevent overheating, oxidation, or distortion of components. Use continuous nitrogen purging during brazing to prevent internal oxidation and carbon buildup inside piping systems. Prepare joints by cleaning, fitting, and aligning components prior to heating to ensure proper fit-up and brazing quality. Inspect brazed joints visually and mechanically to verify proper flow, penetration, and structural integrity. Perform pressure and leak testing using approved methods such as nitrogen testing and soap solution to confirm leak-free joints. Repair defective joints and perform controlled rework following approved procedures and quality standards. Maintain torches, regulators, temperature indicators, and gas supply systems to ensure safe and reliable operation. Follow hot work permits, fire prevention protocols, and personal protective equipment requirements at all times. Record process parameters and report deviations from approved temperature ranges or procedures to supervision or quality personnel. Participate in quality and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance processes, safety, and product reliability. Work primarily on second shift (Mon-Thurs 4:30 p.m.-3:00 a.m.) and support mandatory overtime on Fridays as needed to meet production deadlines. Lift up to 45 pounds and stand for the majority of the shift while performing brazing and assembly tasks. Essential Skills Proven experience as a Pipefitter, TIG Welder, or Industrial Brazing Technician with a strong focus on heavy industrial brazing. Demonstrated experience working with larger diameter pipe (1 inch to 4 inches), with proficiency in either small or large pipe. Ability to braze copper to copper, copper to steel, and copper to brass joints reliably and consistently. Experience achieving and controlling industrial brazing temperatures appropriate for different base metals and filler materials. Ability to perform brazing in all joint positions, including uphill, downhill, and horizontal joints. Strong understanding of heat control, joint preparation, and filler material selection for industrial brazing applications. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and piping schematics to assemble and braze systems correctly. Familiarity with applicable pressure equipment and piping codes that govern design, fabrication, welding/brazing, inspection, and testing for safety and compliance. Proficiency using hand tools, power tools, saws, and pipe fitting tools required for assembly and brazing work. Capability to perform visual and mechanical inspection of brazed joints and to carry out pressure and leak testing. Physical ability to lift up to 45 pounds, stand for extended periods, and perform tasks that require stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders. Good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination for precise torch and filler control during brazing operations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Completion of a brazing or welding school program with torch brazing experience on piping systems ranging from 1 inch to 4 inches in diameter. Manufacturing, pipefitting, or industrial assembly experience, particularly in HVAC or chiller systems. Experience in assembly work joining copper, steel, and alloy components used in chillers and HVAC systems. Ability to read and work from blueprints and manufacturing documentation. Plumbing experience related to piping systems is beneficial. Welding or brazing technical training is preferred. Familiarity with industrial manufacturing environments and adherence to safety and quality procedures. Why Work Here?
