Job Description

Job Title and Description for:
UTILITY WORKER I SUMMARY
: Provides a wide array of basic District functions focused on system maintenance and operations: repair and maintenance of existing canal and pipeline structures, assisting with construction of new structures, weed and trash removal, operations of canal structures and recharge ponds, measurement of water levels, and vehicle and equipment maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
: include the following.
  • Drives manual and automatic transmission pick-up trucks to work site on paved and unpaved roads and canal banks.
  • Walks on earthen slopes to canals and canal structures.
  • Welds structures and equipment parts.
  • Opens canal and pipeline gates. Removes and installs weir boards.
  • Measures and records canal water levels.
  • Walks spreading pond levees to inspect for leakage and water elevation.
  • Adjusts gates and weir boards to regulate water into spreading ponds.
  • Receives and sends information on District mobile radio system.
  • Removes trash from canal structures and places on canal banks and into trash truck.
  • Carries mechanic tools and equipment to and from storage and working areas.
  • Refuels engine, lubricates machine parts, and monitors machine operations to ensure optimum performance.
  • Drills and breaks up concrete. Digs trenches for canal structure foundations.
  • Sets forms and rebar for canal structures.
  • Mixes and pours concrete.
  • Cleans structures and machines with sandpaper, solvent, and wiping rags to prepare surfaces for painting.
  • Paints structures and machinery.
  • Cleans work area, tools, and equipment.
Performs other routine duties as assigned.

  • Cooperate with supervisor training efforts and become fully knowledgeable of job hazards.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment as required by the job.
  • Ask questions if there is a misunderstanding about the way to perform a duty. Employees must not attempt to perform any job or operate any machinery without having been properly trained to operate.
  • Contribute ideas or suggestions for safety program improvements.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
: To perform this job successfully and other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to weld two pieces of metal to the satisfaction of the District.
  • An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE
: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
: Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple English sentences.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
: Ability to add and subtract numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
: Maintain a California Drivers License, Class C. Will operate District vehicle and or equipment in the daily normal course of business. May also be asked to operate a non-District vehicle to conduct District business.
REASONING ABILITY
: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems in standardized situations.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The District classifies this position to be a "Safety Sensitive" position.
