Position Overview Foshee Construction is seeking a dependable and hardworking Tailman / Pipe Laborer to join our underground utility crews in Central Florida. The Tailman plays an important role in the installation of underground utility systems and works closely with the Pipe Layer, Excavator Operator, Foreman, and other field personnel to ensure pipe is installed safely, accurately, and according to project plans and specifications. The ideal candidate understands basic underground utility construction, is comfortable working in an active construction environment, and takes pride in being a dependable member of the crew. This position involves physical labor and working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Key Responsibilities Assist with the installation of storm drainage, sanitary sewer, water main, and other underground utility systems Assist the Pipe Layer with positioning and setting pipe to the proper line and grade Prepare and maintain proper pipe bedding and trench conditions Assist with installing pipe, fittings, gaskets, couplings, structures, and related materials Use grade rods, lasers, and other tools to assist with maintaining proper elevations Communicate with equipment operators using proper hand signals and/or radio communication Assist with trenching, pipe installation, backfilling, and compaction operations Help maintain proper bedding, alignment, grade, and compaction around installed utilities Assist with connecting and securing pipe and fittings as directed Assist with loading, unloading, moving, and organizing pipe, materials, tools, and equipment Work safely around excavators, loaders, dozers, trenching equipment, and other heavy equipment Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area Follow all OSHA, company, and project-specific safety requirements Perform daily inspections of tools and equipment and report any unsafe conditions or issues Work closely with the Pipe Layer, Foreman, equipment operators, and other crew members to maintain productivity and meet project schedules Perform other general construction and labor duties as assigned Qualifications Previous underground utility, pipe crew, or heavy civil construction experience preferred Experience as a Tailman, Pipe Laborer, Utility Laborer, or similar construction position is a plus Basic understanding of underground utility installation and construction practices Ability to use hand tools and small equipment safely Ability to understand and follow directions from the Pipe Layer and Foreman Ability to work effectively as part of a crew in an active construction environment Familiarity with grade rods, laser levels, pipe bedding, and basic grade concepts is a plus Ability to communicate effectively with equipment operators and other crew members Strong awareness of jobsite safety and surroundings Dependable attendance and a strong work ethic Willingness to learn and take direction Ability to work overtime as required by project schedules Valid driver's license and reliable transportation High school diploma or equivalent preferred Ability to communicate and understand English Physical Requirements Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and varying weather conditions Frequently walk, stand, bend, squat, kneel, climb, and work in uneven terrain Work around trenches and active heavy equipment Frequently lift and carry materials weighing 50+ lbs. as needed Perform repetitive physical labor throughout the workday Maintain alertness, coordination, and situational awareness in active construction environments Ability to safely perform physical tasks associated with underground utility installation Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
